When I was young and dumb we hiked into Crandel Lake in Waterton to do some fishing. No bear spray, nothing for self defence even though they hard a Grizzly warning at the trail head. Great day fishing. At night time since we where all naive and still in that untouchable phase/stupid phase we hung all our food in a truss in the camp shelter instead of the tower provided 100 yards away. 1am me and a bud decided to hike back to the truck and hit the bar for some ladies. Didn't even get a 100 ft out of camp when we heard a deep growl probably 20ft ahead of us. Didn't say a word, just turned around and sped walked back to the camp shelter. Jumped up in the rafters about 8 ft high. And we just happened to jump in the same truss the food was hanging from. We could here it walking around and sniffing not to far away. My buddy had some firecrackers and lit them up and dropped them on the floor. That seamed to scare him off. So we warned everyone else sleeping in the tents and all got in the camp shelter. Took all the food and ran it out about 100 yards and just left it. We stoked a big fire and started a watch.
Tell ya when I got home read everything about camping in bear country and learned a big lesson that night. Always got my beer spray and bear bangers. And take the time to camp smart in bear country. The warden chewed us a new arsehope which he had every right too. I still get friends who think it's going overboard by tying your food up in a tree steady 15 ft up 100yards away from camp. Or cleaning up any and all garbage and hanging that too. I learned the easy way. Still got my arms and legs. Not everyone is that lucky. The really need to bring outdoor education back to schools. In a more enhanced way.

Glad to hear you’re alive today regaling us with this kman---but---from what I’ve seen here you’d have a lot more to worry about from AO members than a grizz if ‘beer spray’ was ever deployed….heck that’d draw me in.

I am going back there on monday, for our annual elk hunt. It would make me very happy if our visitor didn't show up again. Time will tell.
