image.jpgThis was my first time ever bear hunting and there was lots of preparation that went into this hunt. After returning home from the wild fire and finding the majority of my hunting grounds burned to ash kinda set me back at first but it also made me go explore and find new areas. After scouting for a few weeks and finding good sign and scat, I set a few trail cameras up. After leaving my cams set up for about a week I went in to check and see what's been roaming around. I walk the trail my first camera was set up on and looking aimlessly I couldn't find it anywhere...great I think, someone stole it. Kinda upset I go back and look harder for it...awhhh... I found it 15 feet from my tree all chewed up! Yes, there are bears here for sure! I did loose a camera but I was excited to see the pictures of the bear destroying my camera. I carrying on and pull the sd cards from my other cameras and get home to check them. Another disappointment.. Not one picture of a bear eating my camera but instead all white flashes as it was too close. However, on my other cams I had some pictures of some good bears. From there I started to look for a good stand location and prepare a bait site. The start of August I found my spot, 4 trails all intersecting into a nice opening in the bush. Now my next weekend is planned! Go buy materials and start building my stand. Once my stand was built the itch was on for the 25th. Once it was legal to bait I put my first bait out and it was hit 4 hours after I put it out. After a few days I finally had a shooter coming in regularly. I couldn't make it out for opener but I was able to get out on saturday the 27th. My friend buddy came up for the weekend to join me on the hunt. So Saturday morning me got up made coffee and was on the road by 6am. After fueling up we were on our way. About 10 km from the spot we come over the hill and a hint black wolf was chasing a decent black bear right across the road in front of us. It was really cool to see. So we arrived at the stand location at 730. After unpacking the truck and grabbing our gear we made it into the bait site for 8 am. I brought some fresh popcorn and some left over pizza to freshen up the bait. Right before we climbed up into the stand I pulled the sd cards from my camera to see when the big guy was in last. He was there at 7:32am and left at 7:45am. (I think he heard us unpacking the truck and decided to leave until the noise settled) that really got me excited knowing he was just in there before us. I lite a few donut flavoured scent sticks and let them burn to add that nice scent into the wind and help cover ours. We are now settled in the stand and the wait is on! We had two thermocells going and the bugs were non exsistant! Made for a great sit. Suddenly my buddy nudges my arm and says...here he comes. 30 yards to our right on the trail we walked in on stood the big boar. He walked back and fourth for about 2 minutes until he finally felt comfortable to come in. He slowly made his way to the pizza (15 yards from the stand ). He grabbed a piece of pizza and heading off back into the bush. As he left I slowly got up out of my chair and grabbed the bow, clipped my release on and waited for his return. Not even 10 seconds later he was coming back for a second slice. He turned broad side right behind my trail camera and look the opposite way...that's when I let a 350 grain full metal jacket fly. Hit him right perfect and he jumped and barked and took off! The excited I was feeling was like nothing else! Knowing all the hard work and time I had spent finally paid off. Certainly an experience I will never forgot. Defiantly a great way to start the 2016 hunting season I have a short video I will try and post but for now I have some photos of the stand and hunt. Enjoy!
Thanks guys and I uploaded the short video of him coming in so its up and the his coat was in great shape, no bare spots and I think I got a little lucky how quick it all unfolded!
You may not be able to edit your original post, but I think the issue with your picture links is that you have an extra "http://" in your <img src> tag.
Have a friend coming up this weekend for a bear hunt and I have this big guy coming to the bait so hopefully it all works out for Saturday. What do you guys think he weighs?
