Info on 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser

I"ve had several and still have one that I still shoot and load for.

It's a great cartridge in either the newer rifles or the older 96's and 98's.
I tend to load the heavy 160's in the older 96 carbines and 140's in rhe newer rifles.
Some of the older rifles had a slower twist than the carbines , so that should be checked if talking about a MILURP gun.
I have shot it in express rifles, drilling, and bolt actions .

I have owned two modern rifles in 6.5x55, and have loaded for two more. It is an excellent all around cartridge.

I've owned a few and consider the Swede to be the most well ballanced round for general deer hunting in existence, and every M96 I've owned has been a tack driver.

I have owned several modern rifles in 6.5 Swede and have found it to be an excellent all around cartridge. Easy to load for, mild recoil and very accurate ..... what's not to like about it. Although eclipsed by some modern rounds it is a solid performer that have been around for well over a century. I will always have one in my collection.

If loading, there are loads for the old Mauser rifles, and loads for modern rifles.

I shoot a 6.5 x55 improved. I have a couple of them. I have one that I built as a target rifle. When I had a few thousand round through it I put on a new barrel. I took the old 30" barrel and set it back 8inches and used it to build a hunting rifle. It is a little heavy as a bush carry rifle but it is an outstanding field rifle. Both are built on 700 actions from old 270s.On my target rifle the gun smith that built it opened up the bolt face a hair as 6.5x55 are the exact same base as a 270. When my hunting rifle was built the bolt face was not opened up and was left the same as a 270.If I use North American brass , Winchester, Remington or Nosler I have no trouble but I can only use Lapua brass in my target rifle as Lapua brass is made to a true 6.5x 55 base. I only tell you this in case you are having one built for you. The cartridge is an excellent deer cartridge ( 32 deer in the last 5 years)and I have taken many deer over 500 yards .It took a deer at 700 yards this year in the hands of my son in law.

It is also a great choice for a young shooter. My son's first rifle was a Voere M98 sporter in this cartridge. He was 13 and back then very small for his age. Very mild recoil.
That 50 year old rifle shot 3/4" groups with factory ammo and 140gr NP reloads. It took 2 deer here, and 3 deer and 11 pigs in Texas.
Plus the charm of shooting one of the world's first smokeless cartridges!
He outgrew it, but it will stay in the safe for future grandchildren.

Yup, one regret I have is not buying a Winchester Featherweight in 6.5x55 when I had the chance!
Never saw a negative to that cartridge in all the years I owned , shot and reloaded for them.

I have two FWT’s in 6.5 Swede, both are excellent and used yearly by the wife and daughter!
Swede has put a lot of meat in our freezers!

I will parrot what others have said. This is a great cartridge - you can't go wrong with it. I will always have a 6.5x55 in my gun safe.

Sorry I guess I should have proof read my post better. I missed the word "not" as in the 6.5 x 55 bass is NOT the exact same as a 270 bass.
