What's involved in mailing a firearm
A friend has a firearm in NS which he wants to have sent. It is already registered to himself, how does he go about getting it mailed out?
thanks

First off don not take my word for the law, check the CFC website, it is in there.
However saying that I have mailed several firearms to my self from back east. The firearm has to be:
1) Unloaded, check, really. Add trigger lock. (Take keys with you!)
2) Sent using a secure mailing method. (i.e. insured and signature required)
3) I alway buy a hard sided case and completely envelop it in sturdy cardboard. The idea is not to make it look like a gun
4) Do not write "Gun" "Firearm" or anything like that on the packaging.
5) Keep reg. cert with you and not with the gun.

Taking that one step farther, if I were to buy a rifle while in the U.S., how can I get it home? Or can I at all?

I called the CFC a while ago on this very subject, and they told me to send it greyhound.

shipping
If it helps, I recently bought a marlin goosegun from a fellow in NB. He sent it canada post expedited, with insurance. The shipping, with ins. was about 26.00.
Arrived safely and timely. The registration process was started before it was shipped; it was actually in my name before it was shipped. New reg. card came maybe a wk later.
I can only speak for this transaction, but it was real slick and hassle free.

Greyhound does not ship firearms or ammo, at least not out of our depot.
Express post , signature required by the mail.
Put it in a cheap plastic case as stated, or in a box.
If I am shipping in a box I often take the rifle apart, I have had a few (especially two piec stocks) broken over the years.
I usually wrap evrything in cardboard as well.
Cananda Post stated before that they do not want any markings on the outside identifying a firearm.
I also like to insure them for replacement value.

cat is right, you could send them (illegally w/ Grey dog) but if something ever happened you are SOL.
I send several Rifles per yr. I use snail mail. I have a GOOD hard case, I wrap the Rifle(s) in bubble wrap, then I place the Case in a cardboard box thats too big and fill it with those styro foam noodle thingys. All these precautions & I still had a Rifle get screwed up when the bbl. of another one drove the sling stud off the back and tore the stock up pretty good.
Last shipment was from Dawson Creek, to central Alberta and it took 5 days.

Canada Post, insured, ground gets it to almost anywhere in the 10 provinces for $25 or less. All good info above, except trigger lock is not required (a good idea, yes. required, no.)
I've shipped this way 3 times since spring - no problems on any of those occasions. You can watch the parcel as it moves through the system using CP's tracking tool on their website. It's always behind reality by a couple of days, so the parcel arrives before it shows it received in the destination city. But, I'll bet that tool is handy when the parcel gets side tracked.

The last gun I ordered from SIR, a 1944 russian carbine arrived at the local IGA post office, packed in grease, in a plain cardboard box, no triggerlock. I just had to sign for the shipment. Old Dagmar thought it was kind of heavy for a box that size, but offered no comment.
