Default New M70 FTF Issue

Interesting one. My sons new m70 in 300wm strikes the primer enough to dimple but not enough to fire. It worked ok for half a box then nada.

Will try another brand of ammo but WTF.

Is the rifle brand new, or new to your son? Has the bolt been stripped down and cleaned inside?

If it's brand new, I would strip the bolt and remove any grease from inside the bolt. Some new rifle bolts are packed with grease, and when the temperatures drop, it can be an issue. And while you are at it, inspect the firing pin.

You’re in luck. The M70 bolt can be unscrewed by just pressing in the button on the back of the bolt and unscrewing. My recent model had a lot of grease for shipping from the factory. Remove. It will take a bit of work. Enjoy your rifle. My bolt smoothed out considerably when I did this. The grease was a little gritty. I used a nice synthetic grease applied lightly as a replacement.

Edit: make sure the safety is in the middle position.

Thanks guys. I pulled the pin as suggested but there did not appear to be excessive grease.

Try this, pull the bolt with the safety off, press the little button on the side and turn the cocking piece to the fired position and see how much firing pin is protruding.

Wow! A buddy just bought a m70 brand new and it's doing the exactly same thing.

Could be a few possibilities.
- bolt body / firing pin too much grease/ oil
- short firing pin protrusion
- weak firing pin spring
-excessive headspace
-debris in bolt body
-something mechanically slowing down firing pin in shroud
- ammo issue itself

Check the tip of the firing pin for roundness. Maybe somebody was enthusiastically dry-firing it and it broke the tip. Or maybe the pin loosened off a bit after a few rounds (I'm not familiar with that bolt, but something has changed). If it worked and then not, sounds like a protrusion problem.

Thanks everyone for the input but can't figure it out. I'll send it to Reliable Guns for warranty fix and update you on what it was.
