Your absolutely right Cat but the chances of wounding at a 1000 are significantly more. I don’t think Kurt has any intentions of shooting game at a 1000 yards just because his gun is capable of it.

That was the point , he showed s target at 1K, and made no mention of even thing of trying to kill an animal that far away .
I am trying to figure out why the disparaging remarks made in his direction because he missed with some bullets.
I missed several times yesterday as well with a rifle at 200 yards that I have no intention of hunting with at that distance .

It is a hunter’s obligation to make the very best shot possible for a quick kill, regardless of range .

Shooting a target at any range shies shots on a target , what the shooter does with that data is up to them.

Exactly. Well said.

I’m just shooting paper at 1000yds and the effects of the wind at that range as you can see are wide ranging. What this has taught me is that you can’t hold a constant for wind even though it’s always blowing. Without any type of marker it’s impossible to judge.

Good shootin Kurt, when I first started shooting 1000 yards we used a 4x8 sheet of plywood, had it mounted on a old boat trailer so we could put it where ever we wanted,it was very good at teaching us to read the wind, some days we would still miss it thow.We now have 16" steel gongs at a 1000 that are usally easy to hit, still miss once in a while thow. There is nothing like hitting the bullseye on your first coldbore shot consistantly.
Good Luck

Never meant anything disparaging to Kurt, it was just a follow up comment (I happened to be talking about long range hunting with my son the other day).
It's just that it seems all the craze these days with all these new cartridges and optics there are.

He didn't say anything about shooting game at long range.

If it came off that way, I apologize, Kurt...

No, I never took it that way, no offense was taken.

1000yds is a long way to shoot, it’s over half way to my goal of 1760. I want to put 5 shots in a 12” target at a mile this year, maybe I’ll have Cats new fancy camera running when I do it

No Kurt hasn't mentioned shooting game at 1000 yards, I took this as testing the limits of his equipment, and it showed how capable his equipment is. But this also made it very clear, that even the best equipment, desn't make it easy to be consistent at 1000 yards with even a slight breeze. I commend Kurt on actually testing the limits of his equipment, and himself under field conditions, rather than just going out and shooting at game at long range, like many people are doing lately.

I wish I had a system like that years ago when I was shooting my 1 mile guns, it was frustrating at times !

It was definite nice to see it come together on only the third time out (first time at 1000yds) with this rifle, and shooting my handloaded ammo. That literally is 1000yds right out of the box, and in this case right into the box it came in LOL!

Post some pics of the rifle and scope, etc. and what you're shooting.

It’s a Gunwerks ClymR chambered in 7mm rem mag shooting 168gr Berger VLD Hybrids. The scope is a Swarovski X5i 3.5-18x50 with the 4WX-i (illuminated) reticle.

Absolutely beautiful rifle, color choice too, Kurt. I used to shoot the 168 Bergers in a 7mag I had and liked them. Love the scope and how "uncluttered" it is. Just right.
What kind of trigger?

It’s a Trigger Tech set at about 2-3/4lbs.

Ya they sure are. I only have a digital archery scale, it seem to break between 2.64lbs and 2.86lbs, hard to get an exact reading.

Yeah my pull gauge isn't great either but I've got it to what reads like a consistent 2 1/4-2 1/2.

TriggerTech says that the way the trigger is built, you can take the screw right out to get the lowest weight the particular trigger will go, with no issues. So you might try that if you want.

I left it in, it's in a .243 hunting rifle and I'm very happy with it.

The only little complaint I have with TriggerTech triggers is the shape of the 'curved lever'. Wish it was a little 'less curved', but didn't want the flat one for a hunting rifle.

Awesome set up Kurt.

Glad that it's working out for you.

That's what really counts.

Nice clean looking setup! I'm slightly jealous... ok more then slightly.

Do you have a picture of the scope looking at the 800 and 1000?

No, that would have been a good idea though. I’ll do that next time I’m out. The center crosshair is bigger than the 12x12 target at 1000yds.

This is really cool. Thanks so much for sharing in the first place Kurt. Most of the comments have been very informative and are a really helpful reminder of how important practice is (even though i'm only shooting to 300 yards!). Thanks again.

I’m sure the 3.5 will come in handy in the bush where it counts though!

That scope reticle is very nice. I love the full length illuminated hash marks. Is it first or second focal plane?

It’s second focal plane, with turrets and it being primarily a hunting rifle I see no need for first focal plane. I have a first focal plane scope and I’m not too crazy about it.
