Default How not to get permission

So, son and I were putzing around in the backyard yesterday, when the dog let's us know, someone is in the yard. Some slick looking dude, reeking of cologne is at the door. Oh it's a hell of a mess, the elk came across the highway, they never do that and one of them got hit by a car. Told him the elk come across all the time when people chase the **** out of them. Well, neighbor to the north is letting us go after them and we're wondering if you'll give us access as well ? Strung him along for a while and finally told him no, my horses are up there, but if they hunt the neighbors be careful. Talked to the neighbor later and asked if he knew them, didn't and had him convinced they had wounded an elk and it ended up on his quarter.

I don't like to be overwhelmed at 4 ft. Not exactly what I would consider a hunting scent. Wonder what the neighborhood grizzlies would think? couple of sows with cubs in the river valley he referred to. Forgot to mention that.

At least once a year some hunters show up here telling me what a favor their doing me by hunting on my place. I find it hard to believe that they think this would work. Or they tell me they got permission on all neighboring properties and want mine too, also rates a no.
If they told me I was the last hope for permission on private land I'd have to say yes.

Default This is the weirdest thread ever

So far we have some beauties.

Wearing cologne and dressing up (slick) constitutes a no when it comes to permission.

If someone has your neighbors permission... it’s a no.

I’m perplexed. Keep em coming.

Yup there is nothing like a fresh group of camoflauge show up in your yard telling you how to manage the wildlife on your land and tell you all about there neighboring permission. I think they are waisting my time and really couldn’t care less. I do give permission but it’s to people who give me permission on there land.

I just go out in June or July. Usually Sat after work, were done at 4. Go home change my clothes, get out and start knocking on doors. I try to be respectful of suppertime and peoples need to relax and not be bothered. I realize I am bothering them. I’m courteous polite and to the point. I will also stop when I see someone fencing or doing maintenance or horeback riding along a fence. I dont go screamin at them I park and wait. Again polite chit chat and to my point.
I get 8-9 no’s, but I get 2 or 3 yesses. Never been run off or shot at. I just dont get the guys that blow in at midday cause theres a buck in a field and ask to shoot it. Anyway, those balls I do not posess. Btw shot a nice cow moose yesterday on one of those yesses.

My thoughts on this situation is he was respectful enough to ask and maybe possibly your neighbor might of misunderstood what he was saying. Having not been there I can't say. I know I don't particularly care for the hat on backwards type with earrings the size of 7/8s washers in their ears but I suppose if the they've got enough respect to ask then they're probably alright.

Anybody who wants to BS a landowner is not all right.

You're right. Did one get hit by a vehicle and they were after it? Did they shoot one and it took off? The story I read is that one was hit on the hiway and they were trying to get ahead of it.

-What's a "hell of a mess"?
-"they never do that" or "the elk come across all the time"?
-Why string him along, why not just say yes or no?
-Should they be careful in general because they are hunting, or more careful than normal? If the later, why more careful?
-I'd assume most people that give permission don't actually know the person they are giving it to?
-If they had wounded an elk, wouldn't it make sense to give them permission to track it onto the neighboring quarter?

Default .... ya ya of course don’t bs a landowner

It’s the other non-critical factors that I find amusing. At least they asked and this isn’t a trespasser thread.

The coincidence of people who ask not to be judged on appearance yet judge on appearance is striking.

We only ask for permission during the season, almost never before unless it was for archery muley.

I average 9 out of 10 on the yes’s vs. no’s

I only wear camo when asking (cow elk in heat cologne included )

We don’t bull****, although I’ve been known to name drop when the situation calls for it. Usually mentioning grandpa’s quarters to the north or uncle Brads quarters to the south gets them smiling.

Definitely not coming across like a douche bag is a win win situation, although like others have said at least those douche bags are asking, compared to the true douche bags who are trespassing and poaching on your land

I'd kind of like the cologne as opposed to reeking of stale cigarette smoke, garlic, and last night's whiskey. Don't have to worry about it though....they pretty much cut my gate when they want in.
