Default My Mini Chief Temps

This was something I have wanted to find out for a while now and finally got to it today. I have a Mini Chief smoker which for me and my uses works awesome.
The outside temperature was +4C. With the chip pan and drip tray in as well as a cardboard box covering the unit I got to 160-170 F. I removed the drip pan as I mostly smoke without it anyway and got about 190F. Now how accurate this was considering I was using a cheap grocery store oven thermometer, who knows.
I plan on buying a better thermometer but have no clue what to get. Looking for something basic and simple.
Any way I love my Mini for what it is.
