Thumbs up BC Extends Wolf Cull

B.C. government extends wolf cull despite nearly 60% opposition

The extension of the aerial wolf reduction program, which impacts 12 of the province's 54 herds and is meant to help threatened caribou populations recover across the province, was confirmed to Glacier Media by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Thursday afternoon.

"The science indicates that reducing wolf densities in caribou areas is one of few short-term options that will effectively reduce declining caribou populations to prevent their extirpation," wrote the ministry spokesperson.

"Having already lost multiple herds in the Southern Group, these measures allow us to prevent further losses."

The extension of the wolf cull, which had been up for renewal in 2020, was delayed for two years at the province's request.

A 2019 report from the province found the culls "will have to take place until habitat restoration and protection overcome the legacy of habitat loss."

The province has put forward parallel plans in an attempt to bring back caribou habitat. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Forestry announced it helped fund 14 grants worth over $1.6 million to block predators from reaching caribou and transplant lichen — caribou's preferred food. The money will also be used to plant trees affected by human activity and wildfires.

Reaction from environmental groups was swift.

Default Wolves

Could you imagine how many wolves would be harvested if the trappers an hunters had a piece of the 1.6 mil? Instead of aerial gunners out of a helicopter at at least 2000 a hour. If outdoorsmen could actually make a winters wage there would be a army that could be trained for years to come not just a few grants.

Personally I think there should be a bounty province wide from the govt for all wolves
$500/wolf and you get to keep the hide

All wolves within 1/2km of the roads would be dead but the rest would flourish from hunters

Trappers would not change do to trapline rules

Me being such a great guy I would be willing to volunteer my time to shoot wolves out of a chopper at no cost providing I could use an AR.

Trapper friend put a severe dent in the "Bow Valley" pack when they left the park. Talk about a song and dance by the antis.

I remember Kelsey grammar whining about the bow river pack on tv. Early in the morning on weekends… I remember being hung over and watching the bs propaganda many times lol

If they were to change the laws regarding civilians being allowed to heli hunt for wolves even if one needed to hire a guide they could save the money and turn it into an economic opportunity for guides.

Caribou may be past saving, however here in Alberta our mountain dwelling Elk would benefit from a severe wolf cull.

Caribou have been in decline since before man had an influence, but if they want to use it for an excuse to cull wolves, that's great.

Southern caribou are a remnant Ice Age species. Even if every human being was totally removed from their range, they'd continue to die out.

But I'd love to get a 'lichen transplant' grant!

My buddy was part of several previous heli wolf culls here in BC. At that time they used a 12 ga semi with buckshot.

Outfitters in BC use to work with the Heli gunners. They would use their own planes to act as spotters to locate wolf packs then help find them when they scattered after shooting started. Found much more efficient Harvest!!

That might be an opportunity for commercial drones - you could cover quite a big area with a half dozen drones - and when you find them - send in the hueys ...
