Default elk calls?

gramps, by far primos and rockie jacobsen have the best diaphrams going. pick up the primos terminator tube, add a tube tamer and start with the single reed mouth calls and practice, practice, practice!! did i mention to practice. i get tired of hearing guys going out, buying a couple calls, then heading out to the bush to hunt. nopractice and no clue of the sounds they are supposed to make.
elk are smart enough, dont need to be educating them with badly immitated sounds.
if the wife and kids dont like you practicing around the house, do it while you drive to work. there is a ton of good instructional cd's and dvd's out there, pic up a few and give it a whirl.

i forgot to add, go with the palate plate calls, easier to use and less gag reflex.
anyways hope this helps a little, take care, rob

I agree, I have had good luck with the Rocky Jacobson Bugling Bull Game calls. I prefer his diaphram calls. I know some people have problems with the whole gag reflex thing but has never been an issue for me. The Conquerer mouthpiece that comes with his monarch bugle is easy to use and great for beginers. they have a great instructional cd as well.

There are lots of good calls out there just have to find the ones you like and get proficient with them.

I also recommend trying out a diaphragm call to see if you like it or not. If you can handle it, then like they said - practice, practice, practice. If you can't get over the feel of it in your mouth (the diaphragm calls aren't that expensive so you won't have wasted that much money) then you buy an external call like the "Power Bugle".

That just covers bugles though and, in my opinion, cow calls are just as important (if not more important). There are lots of versions of these as well and most of them will work fine. I would be a couple different ones. For a couple reasons - 1. you can make more sounds (sound like different cows) and 2. some calls have the nasty habit of getting spitted up and can produce some not-so-desirable sounds until they are dry again.

That's my $0.02

I agree with BB. I've used a Hoochie for a few years now and they work great.

I really like my Sceery special elk call. It sounds a little different than the common calls that most people carry. I also carry a few Primos; Lead cow and calf, H.M., and the Cow girl, plus a couple different palate mouth reeds. I also pop the end off my Thunder Bugle and cow call with it.
