Default Deer Calling - anyone ever done it?

OK seriously. Has anyone ever called a doe with fawns, or just does into archery range from 100 meters?

I can't do it ... they hear the call (Primo original call in a can) ... look up ... then go back to feeding.

Year after year ... it's the same thing.

What else can I do to get them coming my way?

Buck bomb?

ideas please.

A fawn in distress sound is great for mulie does, they'll run right over you. I haven't tried it on whitetails however.

They won't come in. They have no reason too.

The Can is a estrous bleat used for calling in bucks.

Mulie does might come in to a fawn in distress, WT's you will blow them into the next county.

Fawn in distress. That may work, but won't them come in on high alert then?

Isn't there a social call that will bring them in (sometimes at least?).

I guess a doe with 2 fawns has enough to do and worry about without checking out come other deer.

I always thought they'd be eager to get together as the rut gets closer.

That's bowhunting I guess.

I've rattled in more does than called with a grunt. Light sparring usually brings in the curious ones.

A predator call works good for mulie does, not sure about whitetails.

I have called in both wt and md does with a fawn in distress call. works good. It is best to work in tandem with someone else. While one person calls and draws the attention away from you just shoot her as she walks by.

Don't know if that'll work with my five year old son... although he did good with the can call tonight. Excellent idea though, we do that with hung up bull moose lots ... have the caller start walking away and call again .... brings the bull right past the shooter.

OK - so who makes a good fawn in distress call? I'll either go to cabelas or wholesale.

Your going to see alot of white flags doing that.

I would sit tight and eventually one will give you a shot.

Weedwack a trail past your stand. Let it settle down for a few days. They will all walk right by.

I have grunter in a few does so far this year. Once they smell me they bolt though. hah. I have been trying the buck stopper which is a young doe bleat and havn't been seeing much with it. My mock scrape is working great for bucks though. Lots of bucks checking it out on my trail cam.

I'm not in a stand ... that'd be easy (and I agree). I'm hunting with my son in a brushed in pop up blind. 8 deer all within 100-150 meters tonight ... just looking for a way to increase there curiosity and feed my way, instead of the other way. We are concealed well and nothing alarmed at us ... just nothing close.

I found a few calls at both wholesale and cabelas. I'll pick one up and try it.

I agree though, sitting tight and doing a true complete ambush will give the best opportunity for a clean shot with an arrow.

Good luck, hope you get one and your boy gets to see it go down.

Get a hold of the video "How To Talk To Deer" by Eastman (shows how to use the call by the same name.)

Then by the "Deer Talk" call.

(google "Eastman Deer Talk")

Duffy - has this worked for you. Have you called in flatheads into range during archery season ?

I have had more luck calling in mule does while coyote hunting with a distress call than any other method of calling for deer....

Key thing is these were mule does which always seem too curious for their own good. White-tail usually bust and take off.

I have rattled and grunted in a few bucks but mostly white-tails, only once a young muley buck and he almost ran me over! I literally had to jump out of the way.

Deer are probably the hardest things to call in that I know of. Elk and moose are a breeze compared to deer.

I have most often used this call when I have "jumped" deer and wanted to calm them down. They have often stopped running away and started walking toward me. I use the "deer talk" not the "fawn distress" for this. I have always been rifle hunting at the time and don't recall if I have called deer into bow range.

Be very careful if you or your son are doing fawn distress calling. It will bring in different predators who are looking for a meal.

I have used it to call in wolves. And have heard of people calling in cougars and bears weather they wanted to or NOT!

I have the video, it's worth watching.

I've called in WT does within archery range many times, throughout the year. During the rut, I've used fawn calls to attract does, which will often have a buck on their tail. Ever seen a buck with a doe across the field and he won't come in to grunts or rattling?

Instead of a "Fawn in Distress" call, use a Fawn call, a soft relatively high pitch bleat. This call will bring the deer in without the animals being as nervous compared to when using a distress call.

If you can't find a doe/fawn bleat call, try a cow elk call such as a diaphram or the Cow Talk from E.L.K inc. The Cow Talk call can be adjusted to obtain the right pitch and resonance.
