Default Full Metal Jacket' actor R. Lee Ermey dies at age 74

I always liked this guy

R. Lee Ermey, a former Marine Corps drill instructor known to millions of moviegoers as the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket," died Sunday morning, according to his longtime manager. He was 74.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Bill Rogin said Ermey had died due to complications from pneumonia.

Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed

Hard to believe Full Metal Jacket is 30 years old. Still a great war movie and Emery took it to the next level. Pretty bad when you have to explain your improv to the director and tell him what a reach around is.

In the Canadian Forces, you cannot swear at (such as the use of the F or CS words) nor strike a recruit.

He was a very likeable guy and interesting to listen to.

He made a whole career out of essentially playing a more subdued version of his FMJ character in documentaries and such.

Good on him.

The Canadian Military is one of the best trained armed forces in the world and as recruits, they didn't have to be verbally nor physically abused as in the film clip, FMJ. They were yelled and screamed at, they did the pushups and punishment drills, hauled butt, etc but, they didn't have to fear of being struck with a pace stick or, being the butt of the filthiest language in the world.

I went through Other Ranks boot camp in 1963 and Officer boot camp in 1970, the 2nd one was the hardest. Spent 3 yrs at CFB Cornwallis back in the early 70's when it was the CF boot camp for English speaking recruits. A lot of kids entered the gates of Cornwallis, but 11 weeks later, a lot of men went out that gate.

I remember one humorous side story from Cornwallis. After the recruit graduation parade, there was a reception in the drill hall for the staff, recruits and their family, friends etc. One mother came up to the Base Commander and said, "What did you do to my son, he keeps calling me Ma'am? I told him, don't call me Ma'am, I'm your mother for God's sake."

Cheers!

I was fortunate enough to guide gunny on a wt hunt. At first i was sceptical when then the outfitter claimed a celebrity would be joining us. As well as a the camera crew ,well most guides would cringe after that sentence, it has added high maintenance complexity and difficulty mostly of keeping the sailors talk on a he down low. Well The exact opposite was true with gunnies bunch. Camp erupted. Keeping focused and staying serious was the last thing we done what a full time riot he was and a high lite of my days guiding. Please you tube his locked and loaded mail call bloopers and you will see the kind man he was. His gieco commercial is very funny as well. Gunny RIP.

I never knew he made so many video's locked and loaded mail call bloopers might not be ready for prime time (language warning) but who has more fun than a Gunny on his private range with his full auto collection.

I like the man more than ever now R.I.P
