Default Corn or Canola?

So I went to buy a 4 litre jug of oil for the Burbot in Beer Batter feast I was planning for this evening. Figured it was time for some new oil for the deep fryer. I was faced with the choice of Corn or Canola oil and quite frankly I don't know if one is better then the other or if it even makes a difference.
Thoughts or suggestions please.

EDIT..... of course i had to complicate things by going on Google. I am now adding olive and peanut oil. Actually peanut oil sounds tempting, but nowadays lots of people are allergic.

Personally I would use canola oil because of its health benifits over corn oil.

I like olive oil when frying fish but canola in the deep fryer

Grape seed oil from Costco is what I use for deep frying turkey, chicken and fish. Has a high smoke point and good flavor.

I shallow fry any battered fish using canola in a cast iron skillet. Batter browns quicker and you don't end up overcooking the fish to rubber status.

A Long time ago for shore lunch we used 50% lard and butter that was before it was bad for you, now we use canola

Cotton seed oil is my favourite with Halibut topped with sweet red chilled pepper sauce works well with any fish actually

I find corn oil makes the most tasty and crisp batter. I did try olive oil (wife) with my favourite fried chicken blend and it was nasty stuff and regret seasoning my cast with it as well. Yuk

Default Cooking oil

Although usually expensive, peanut or sunflower oil for cooking or deep frying does not leave any aftertaste that you may find with some of the other cooking oils. I will use mostly canola oil or corn oil for general cooking, but fish or goose will always go with peanut oil, cooking for 4 or 5 people not a lot of oil needed with cast iron fry pan. Deep fried some goose meat last nite and was awesome, just don't get the oil too hot.
Not a real fan of olive oil, but haven't tried all of the different types and they are not cheap either.

Costco, canola oil. usually around $21.00 per 16L jug. Is what I use.

Haven't tried it for deep frying, but I would go with coconut oil. It has a high smoke point and definitely a good oil health wise. Butter would be good too (recent studies have shown that saturated fat is not bad for you as once thought).

Be wary of canola oil, many sources cite it as being healthy, but most canola oil is partially hydrogenated (this doesn't have to be labelled in Canada as far as I know). This partial hydrogenation process creates damaging free radicals.

Canola oil is one of the healthiest oils you can use in deep fryer etc, and as already mentioned supports Alberta farmers and one of the lowest cost to buy. Do I need to say more!

Thanks for posting that little article about all those different oils. Very interesting. Never even heard of some of tose oils. Walnut or sesamie seed sounds tasty.

I did end up going with Canola oil. The burbot, home fries and onion rings were great!

Health benefits are swinging away from Canola etc to lard, butter etc.
Depends on the day and the 'science' used that day. Same with eggs.

Use some common sense and balance what you eat. You can get a large container of common sense from your grand parents. They ate what they wanted/had and didn't bother with a gym membership.

I do find that for some reason deep frying in a Dutch Oven is 'Da Bomb'

Try shallow frying your fish just once in a cast iron skillet. I find deep frying overcooks the fish if the oil is new and the heat isn't right.

Dry the fish, light coat of flour, then your batter - cook til browned on one side and flip it once til brown.

We use peanut oil from super store in our deep fryer, because of the higher smoking point.

Olive oil or pure lard is what I use. I don't buy the "canola oil is healthier" line.
If you really want a healthier option, try baking your fish. Haven't tried baked burbot though...
