Default Family sold the hunting cabin. Sad day......(pic heavy)

35 years hunting that area.

First place I ever got told ‘go get some meat for supper’ and I grabbed my 12g single shot Ranger and took my 15 year old legs on a trek in unknown Bush to get 4-5 ruffles for my dad to cook up for our hunting crew.

My daughter and son both learned to chop wood, snare rabbits and grouse. Still hunt white tails out there.

There were many years I used it as an escape from the pressures of the job and my life.
My dad and I would spend evenings playing crib by candle light. Listening to the Oilers (Smyth was a young up and comer... Jared Stoll... others) on a small AM radio.

Waking up in -35 temps to put more wood in the burner.... maybe a couple lumps of coal we collected from the ditches at Wabamun...

It’s been sold now. I just hiked in and out this evening to get two Trophy heads I had in the cabin.

It was nice hunting the land of the Broder buck.

Time moves on... good memories stay at least..

Three generations of hunters were in that cabin. Hinted that land.

Lil sad... not gonna lie.

Sad for you.

Broder was my neighbour in Rundle years ago, the buck was in his basement.

Cool! You got to see it? Boy that’d be something.

There was a nice herd of mulies that seemed to hang around Macay and Beta lake...

In all those years I only saw one ok mulie buck....maybe he’d go 150-160... but the area is something else.

I tracked a wounded doe into the skeg one season.... found a lynx trying ya chew on the ascend of it.

My daughter’s first ever snared critter was a juicy ruffy.

I hope at least another family will enjoy it as much as yours did.
I don't want to hear the land was sold to a hutterite colony, and the cabin is getting pushed into a pile along with all the trees.
But that seems to be the way things are going these days...

Sorry Bessie. Great looking shack. If you've been in that Beta Lake and east, Poison Creek area, we've been real close.

That’s what’s happening up around the Athabasca area.

Unfortunately that is happening everywhere, but the reality is that once something changes hands the owner can do whatever they want , whether it is a vintage car turned into a hot rod , a piece of land tilled over and cultivated or a choice piece of pasture turned into a subdivision ,etc.
Sad but true.......

Bessie; Don was quite open to visits etc. In those day's we often had a few wobble pops and he would retell his Dad's story. The "cape" was terrible and in terrible condition, but the antler mass was massive. Memories are funny, but he was working on a deal to recape the animal. After Don moved to west central Ab. (1985??) we lost contact, and I read somewhere there was a family dispute about the animal.
Want more info??

I feel your pain sir!. But know one can buy your memories, or take this special place out of your heart! You can always pour your self a glass of CR, sit back, close your eyes and go back to that special place in time.

Anyone can buy land and do the same thing Dewey. Hutterites don't get special prices or privileges so I'm unsure why you'd single them out. The land owner decides who to sell to unless theres been a foreclosure.

You will have the memories for sure Bessie.
I know for sure that my heart lies within my land / cabin east of Valleyview.
I miss it being half a world away, and when I’m there the world just doesn’t matter.

Just like great hunting spots that change over time, tons of memories. Looks like a cool place to make some Bessie.

That first pic of the fire. How many of us grew up being mentored around back woods fires like that after a day out in the bush, watching and listening to our dads and uncles talk about what they saw, the next's days plan and everything in between.

Yea..... that fire pit.

Cold metal old coffee cups with crown n coke. Super cold nights.. so cold you’d turn your backside to the fire n warm it.

I’m glad my kids got to experience it for the brief time that they did.

270.... yes. Cabin was in fact around Poison Creek.

I actually tried to find fishin in that Creek a couple of times... right in the muskeg.... miles of muskeg inthat area. Good moose patch.

It’s just as well.... the crazy neighbors went and just freshly logged their land.... land I used to hunt intensely way back before they bought it (about 10 years ago).

Oilngas.... it’s cool that u knew him and got to see that buck.

Earliest I hunted that area was 1984-85.
It was a hell of a lot wilder back then.

270....We might have been neighbors. Pm me n we can compare notes.

Sorry to hear, Bessiedog! Treasure the memories.

Dreaming of getting some land in the bush, put a cabin on it... Some day when I have money.

Trying to figure that out myself.... all the ones I have known are good honest hardworking people. They may be shrewd business folk but there’s nothing wrong with that in my books!

Sad to hear about the cabin, hopefully you can find another and start a new set of memories?? , I’ve been wanting one for at least 15 years now but unfortunately finances and lack of land in an area that I like has postponed it. I do have the plans all up in my head though! One day!

Sorry for your loss I have spent the last 12 years at my happy place, wish I would have done this 40 years earlier and bought a piece of land.

Nope....

I will flat out NEVER afford a hunting cabin..... let alone a chunk of land.

I don’t make that kind of $.... never have.

I’m thankful for the times there... I am doubly grateful that I live where I do and the Bush is right outside my door.

Having a cabin in the Bush is a privilege indeed.

Default mule deer

The Broder Buck scored 355, the next closet B&C Alberta non-typical muley buck is 272.

It's never easy to move on and leave such a beautiful place that made a ton of memories for you and your family, but sometimes we manage to hit that curve ball outa the park and find a new memory maker. Sad for ya Bessie, I hope you find something to fill that void and more!

Yuppers, looks like it's time to pick up the next hunting cabin to keep the good times going...

One down as the next gets underway this winter if you and family are up to the task,,, a bit of work but well worth it once its sorted...

Do your own time share with close / close family friends,,, that way everyone gets to reap the rewards of good times

I never look at things as a loss when the next game plan gets underway...

Many reasons that the family cabin gets sold and is a loss to other family members.

Biggest reason is that the family member who owned it dies and no one else can afford to buy it from the Estate to keep it going.

There is a Family I know right now where the parents' have to sell their cabin as they are elderly and are facing nursing home bills. None of the 4 adult kids, and none of the cousins want to throw in, either individually or as a group, to buy it.

As always, money talks.

Best you can do Bessiedog is to be thankful for the family members who carried the financial burden all these years so that you could have the benefit of use of the place, and remember the good times you had.

Right now I am that guy who is bearing the financial burden for the benefit of friends and family who receive the direct benefit.

I can see the other side of the story, and if bad came to worse and I had to sell, it would be a loss to the others who have had the good times at my expense. But I doubt anyone would write the cheque to keep the good times going.

Perhaps this thread will make people appreciate the people who are shouldering the load for something that is typically taken for granted by others.
