Default Elk River Fernie

I want to take my grandson fly fishing the first week in August. The guides want 1k per day for two people. I am thinking we will fish with waders. Can anyone help me with access points and tips to fish surrounding rivers?
Thank you.

First off, check the water levels before coming out. I was out by the Elk yesterday and it was running very high and muddy, should be down by then but make sure. Second, you say surrounding rivers. Which rivers do you have in mind? Remember a lot of the water in the area are classified, meaning you need an additional license for each day and each river/stream. If you planned on fishing say the Wigwam for 2 days that would be $40 on top of your BC fishing license. Also if your looking for access points knowing what rivers would help too.

I have never fished the area and I am fine with paying for licenses. I just would like ideas on where to start. I am 71 years old so I do not want any long hikes.
My grandson is 16 years.

I hope you and your grandson have a grand time. Good luck, I bet he will never forget.

The Back Road Map book would be a good resource for you. https://www.backroadmapbooks.com/pro...road-mapbooks/
The Elk river has a lot of easy access, but it is a busy river. Especially at that time of year, the Wigwam is a great one as well but access is more difficult as it is motor vehicle restricted so there is some hiking involved.
Bring a good selection of dry flies, Parachute Adams and Royal Wulffs are a couple of my go to patterns plus Hoppers. Ither terrestrials such as ants and beetles are good to have on hand too.

Check for license info here:
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/s...ishing-licence

For non-residents for restricted waters the they went on sale in February so getting one may be an issue... which is likely why guided trips in high season cost so much.

A non-restricted river may have to be an option.

You can't fish the Wigwam without booking a day on the government website or using a guide for $1000.
I imagine all the days were booked months ago

Post WigWam

Working down here now
Chances of on line dates for WigWam are probably nil and nil
Michele? creek probably the same but a guide can put you on there $850.00/Day
there are some non classified streams and a river (Kootenay) and you can buy daily for the elk river and other less popular streams
very confusing initially

Sounds like the guides have all the classified waters tied up. I am wondering if we have the classified water license am I able to fish certain parts of the Elk river? Or any other near by streams.
Thank you

If you have a classified license for the Elk you can fish any part of it, this includes tributaries unless the tributary is listed separately in the regs as in the case of the Wigwam.

If you can afford to, book a guided trip. Your grandson and you would absolutely love it. First week in August can be one of the best times on the Elk. If you hit it right on a float trip you could have one of the best days on a river you may have in a lifetime.

Thank you for the information. I just have a hard time paying 1k for 2 people per day. I understand what is happening now. I know how to fly fish so I will explore on myself.

Hmmm...after reading this thread, I am glad I was able to fish some of those waters before all the restrictions were put in place. There are so many licences, and restrictions in place to fish certain bodies of water before you put your line in the water in that area. Serves as a deterrent more than anything from taking fishing up as a hobby by the province of BC.

Been awhile but there are several spots to park and walk.
The upstream end from Fernie has some deep pools, weighted streamers will get into some of the bigger cutts.
As you get closer to town and down stream look for tributaries and try to fish those spots.
Even right beside the highway can have good fishing for drys in the evening.

That is one of the stated, intentional purposes of Classified Waters: to manage angler numbers.

I just wish Alberta would implement a similar system, but not have it favour guides so much.

Funny driving past the Michel now and seeing know one fishing. The guides must love it for the odd days they end up on it.

I fish the Michel regularly. It is always busy guided and non guided a like. It might not look like it from the road but guaranteed there is someone in almost every spot any day of the week. And a lot with Alberta plates
I do the elk with a guide in a boat. best way to fish it on the lower runs. I paid 650 last year. Can't imagine they went up 350 in one year. There are a lot of different guides. Did you shop around? When the fishing is on which is often, it is a hard river to beat.

Cool Elk River Floats

The going rate is $850.00 per boat (Up to 2 Fishing).
I'm still looking for Bull trout but I believe big baits (Plus luck) in any deep hole should produce

Ever!

Castle system is just fine. If you are finding a stretch crowded…. Please… try walking 500 meters and find a hole.

You’d be amazed at how much no-traffic / super light traffic waters there are in that area.

Classifying waters is akin to gentrifying and gating communities.

Those of us that live paycheck to paycheck….. we get excluded.

Fully disagree. Won’t bother arguing about it though…

Fishing the eastern slopes should be on a draw type system, period.

Screw that, I can see it now, priority 18 you can get drawn in 2040 but you have to fish a limited stretch of water, the draw is for 3 days and you don't get to pick them.

Reminds me of the Atlantic salmon draws in NB, I know guys who haven't fished in decades because they haven't got drawn.
