Default Radioed Elk

Here are a couple of radioed elk I managed to get on my trail cam this month. I got lots of elk every night. Got quite a few with just ear tags as well.

They have them on so they cam keep up to date on current news and weather forecasts. Plus they can listen to their favorite tunes etc while they're grazing

Once you zero in on the frequency you can find them any time you want.

Now what is the legality regarding harvest of an animal with a collar?

The first 2 collars are VHF meaning all they do is transmit a radio signal on a specific requency. Good luck finding it!! These collars signals often "drift". The last 2 are GPS collars meaning they collect GPS waypoints for researchers so they can plot movements on a fine scale. Some GPS collars are remotely downloadable from a handheld computer and others collect and store the data.

Love it. 1900 pics in 20 or so days. Batterys are still at 79%.How it works in cold weather I do not know as of yet. Bought another at Wally World today. $139. Model IR 55. The only critters that messed with it were elk, then I put it higher on the tree and aimed it down. Pesky critters.

Fair game, it's part of the mortality record, but they want their collar back. Found a dead elk at the Ya Ha, with one. Cause it was an old one, they let me keep it. interesting souvenir. The batteries are sealed into the unit, when built and are not replaceable. Life expectancy of the unit is the life of the batteries.

On the pictures of ear tags, can you read the numbers or zoom in and read them? If so you could email the pics to the nearest Wildlife staff with Fish & Wildlife and they could get some data from them, too.

I wonder if they would find it interesting if before you turned the collar in you drove around in the city for a few weeks with the collar on the dash of the truck
Might make for some fun migration route history, could always mail it to Hawaii, I'm betting any Elk would luv to winter there ;o)

Those are great pictures Honda, Thanks for sharing them
