While I wouldn't necessarily say it's the best set up, one of the classic Bow River set ups is using floating line, and indicator, about a 9' leader to a heavy (let's say size 2 or 4 to start) copper wire san juan worm, and then about a dropper fly about 3' from the san juan. With the weight of the san juan, you don't need to use split shot. Try your basic prince nymph / pheasant tail / gold ribbed / copper john type of droppers as starters. One of the keys will be mending your line for a drag free presentation along the bottom of the river. adjust your indicator according to how deep you're fishing - good luck and be safe.
