Default Price of lead?

What would a five gallon pail of wheel weights or similar be worth these days?

It depends what percentage of the wheel weights are lead and what percentage are zinc. They have to be sorted and separated before you melt them down . This is a slow dirty process. If they are current , as in you recently picked them up from a tire shop. Chances are you have more zinc than lead . Unprocessed lead weights I wouldn’t give more than 50 cents a lb . Zinc I wouldn’t buy.
Clean processed lead in ingots can go $1 to $2 lb but it takes a lot to get it there. Even at $2 lb you’re making nothing processing hazardous material

Default Lead

There are a lot of variables with weights. Years ago there used to be a fairly decent yield of lead melting down weights, today, not as much. Most tire shops the last few years have gone to a more “Environmentally Friendly” alternative to lead. The amount of Cull these days is significant. A lot of Zinc, Steel weights, Plastic coated weights… A 100 pond pail of weights can yield as little as 20 pounds of lead, or maybe up to 50 pounds. Surprising what the cull weighs after smelting them down. Used to be tire shops were happy to give them away, but now with more people making hooks, or shot pellets, it usually costs a bit. I usually pay about $40-$50 for a 5 gallon pail of raw wheel weights depending on what they look like.

Sorry to butt in but if any one is interested----I have 1,350 lbs of ingots. Most are about 125 lbs and some smaller. A couple different hardness's. Located in Elkford--From a Cominco smelter in Trail.
