Default Bonus GST today.

Check your accounts. I see there is a bonus GST payment today, Nov. 4. Helps a little bit.

I was really counting on this cheque. Now I'll just have a warm house to starve in.

If you're eligible for it, I imagine you could use the small return. Some people need a break...

It makes the politicians feel good about themselves when they can give you your money back! Money they forcefully took from you. It’s not like you have a choice in paying it.
GST a tax created by a conservative government and enforced by all governments since. Now being used as a handout to buy votes

It’s not about the politicians feeling any warmth in their hearts. It’s about vote buying as Huntinstuff said. Buying your vote with your money. Or like others who didn’t receive it; my money.

Why am I suspicious that people don't know that there was a Federal hidden wholesale tax of 13.5% on manufactured goods in Canada before the GST was implemented?

You can't run a country on fairy farts.

Now the GST encompasses much more than manufactured goods but it is considerably lower than what the manufacturers tax was.

Some people need a break and some people can't abide that.

Quote:
Canadian Income Survey 2019
Unattached individuals under 65 years of age had a median after-tax income of $33,800, whereas unattached individuals aged 65 years and older had a median after-tax income of $29,500.

Some people can’t abide that? I don’t think anyone feels that way. And no the country can’t be run on fairy farts but the current government is blowing our tax dollars on fairy tales. The fairy tales are costing us dearly, ruining our economy and people are hurting because of it, especially the most vulnerable which I would hazard a guess all on this board would like to give a helping hand up to.

Stop making excuses for the poor actions and policies of the government and their out of control spending habits.

You're on the wrong track. I loathe this government.

Default Gst

Everybody hates to pay taxes
When the government of the day is run by a bunch of free-spending buffoons with woke ideological goals who are peeing it out the window faster than we can make it everybody REALLY hates to pay taxes.
The current gang of fools has pumped way too much money into the economy causing inflation at levels we haven't seen since that other T guy was PM - this can't be a coincidence.
As a means of dealing with their mismanagement, they are now pumping more money into the economy by increasing the GST credit.

All that aside
If you will cast your mind back to the implementation of the GST under Mulroney, the first GST credit was paid before the tax was implemented.
The idea was that for those who were below a certain income threshold, that the government would pre-pay the taxes on essential goods which they would have to pay in the next quarter so that the tax would not disproportionately affect those who were in the lowest income bracket.

Funnily enough the GST is a far fairer and more ethical way to tax than is income tax.
You don't pay it until you spend your money so unlike your income tax, the government does not get an interest free loan for the entire year.
You get to decide how much tax you pay based on what you decide to purchase. If you are in straitened circumstances, you generally reduce your spending and reduce the tax you are paying.
and
Every time you pay for something the tax is separated out so you get to look at your invoice and ask if you're getting value for your money.

This as opposed to income tax which is taken off of your cheque every two weeks no matter what your financial situation at the time and which may be refunded to you after 16 months with no interest if you have over paid
and which is for the most part hidden - how many people look at their paycheques and get wound up about the tax every two weeks - it would be exhausting - they get PO'd once a year.
