Thumbs up Red River Drainage Stream Fishing (with Pics)

Hi all,

Spent another fine day on the the streams over the past weekend (Prairie Creek to be exact). The weather was good, the air was clean and the water was nice a clear. No hatches happening so not many rises so we had to go hunting for the brown trout today. Tough casting from the bank and many areas not fishable from the bank (no casting room).

here is the creek:

Here is the first fish landed ... a lively 16 inch brown ... Good thing I had my long reach net to land them without falling in.

After a little while and a few more fish caught on dry flies and I managed to hook a nice 21 inch brown trout. He then managed to wrap himself around a loose log in the stream and few times. With some help from my partner and my 2X tippet and I landed both the fish and the log (both were released).

We headed upstream so more and fished some really good water, but nothing doing. I managed to finally wade into the water a bit to cool off (dam neopreans) and go after a brown that was following my simulator (for like 10 feet) but was not hitting. As I was changing flies, my partner managed to hook and I then helped him land this monster 27 inch brown in almost full spawing colors. We called it a day after that and headed for the campfire and some wiskey!

Nice fishes!!!

I was on Prairie Creek last Friday. I fished downstream of the bridge at the Strachan camp ground and found a few small browns. Biggest was about 14".

It was tough to find places to access decent water where you could cast. Once I found a couple places I tended to stay at them for awhile.

Which part of the creek were you fishing?

See ya

We were using #6 & #8 stilulators & hoppers. We fished mostly from the east side of the river .... It was last Saturday.

I think taking a small kayak on the creek would be best for access myself, but I haven't worked out all the details yet regarding anchoring and whatnot.

Thanks for the comments.
