Default Anyone ever buy a Grohman clearance knife?

I just took a chance and picked one up.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Are the flaws big time flaws...?

I've got a fillet knife and a boat knife that were seconds. The flaws were in the handles and were pretty minor. No complaints from me.

I'd have to go look to be sure, but I think that they are stamped with an 's' on the blade to indicate that they were seconds.

S in a circle?
That is what they used to designate their stainless blades.

Grohmann's have very high standards
I drop by the shop whenever I am in Pictou.
The last two that I purchased had: 1. a very small scratch/chip where the tang met the handle - less than 2mm and 2. As they said - the edge was too coarsely milled - Mr Lansky took care of that in about half an hour

Hard to go wrong

Could be a dumb question, but am looking at prices in CAD or USD on their website?

I looked at their clearance section a gazillion times, but never decided to pull the trigger on anything. Good knives, that's for sure. I do have a couple of "not seconds" Grohamnns and they are great.

I've purchased several. I have two knives in the kitchen that get daily use for the last 5 years and they're still great. Sharpen up nicely too

Every knife of theirs that I ever saw, had the type of metal used stamped into the ricasso. Circled 'S' is factory seconds AFAIK.

IE: Stainless / #1, 2, 4 Carbon / etc...
About 30 years ago , is it the s inside the circle?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Same on my two 'seconds'. A faint 's' stamped into the blade. No circle around the 's'.

From what I have heard, generally they won't release a knife if there is a blemish near the working part of the blade but on the spine of the blade or the handle is fine. And of course marks on the handle are ok as well.
I like my Grohman knife. It gets sharp. I wish it held an edge better. It I still like it. It's one of the easiest handling knifes I have for skinning.

I forgot to mention a couple of the "blemishes" I've had on those knives.
One had an extra rivet (3 instead of two)
One had a small scuff in the plastic handle.

I bought two a few days ago! Everything I read said the seconds are very minor. I saved a lot of cash so even if there are some marks it just means I won't baby the knives any.

Any chance the seconds are seconds in the steel? That's what I worry about. I checked the web site and all it says is "usually" the problem is in the handle. They have some stuff I would be interested in for the kitchen.

No chance IMO
I have been to the plant many times and as far as I can tell they are production run knives with very minor defects.
Typically these will be small scratches or chips in the handle, or as I mentioned above I got one that I couldn't find the defect and they told me that they felt that the edge had been too coarsely ground. I redo the edges on my knives anyway so no odds except for the 50% saving.
I have bought a number of seconds both for kitchen, for hunting/bush and as presents - never had a complaint yet.
(Yes I live in NS and yes I think we should do everything that we can to promote this first class Canadian product, whether in best quality or in factory seconds - why buy Buck or Henckels when you could buy Grohmann?)

My buddy went back home (N. S.) and picked up one for me. I had a first cut one, but in the process of using my quad to move the moose around while I was gutting it in a swamp, I lost it. Spent an hour looking for it and gave up. Waist deep grass and willows, in three inches of water. Lucky I had a back up knife. I guess I cried too much, so he help me out the following summer.
Anyway the seconds are no different than the first cut ones. They get inspected when they come off the line and thats it.
I confirm, capital S on the oposite side of the knife as the Brand stamped side. No circle.

Final Sale "Seconds" are 50% off the regular knife price! Seconds are new, unused, Scratch-n-Dents engraved with an "S" for 'second' on the back of the knife blade.

Seconds do not have a warranty and are final sale only. Usually the flaw is in the handle, and can be small cracks/chips/worm holes etc, but can be any imperfections that does not make the knife a first quality item. For more detailed information on each knife such as length, etc check the regular website section.

I've just ordered Kitchen 8" forged Chef knife 50% 72 $ keep in mind there is standard shipment of 19.99 in Canada so total cost about 95$.

Do they charge 19.99 for each knife or for package ? Could not find this info on their site.
