Default Dogs and cats?

It appears I've got a problem. I've got a bernaise mountain dog cross (about 1 1/2 years old) and a golden retriever (about 7 years old). The wife has some barn cats. I woke up this morning to find a dead cat out in the yard again. I'm not a cat lover by any means but would appreciate some advice on how to stop my dogs from killing my wife's cats.

Thanks.

How do you know it is the dog and not an owl or hawk? A yote would of likely left with it. Killed but not eaten?

I know it's the dog or dogs. Seen them attack one last week. They were proud as punch of it.

Dogs hate cats. I think the only way to get a dog over this is to introduce a pup to a tough cat that doesn't run. Once they have a taste of killing cats I doubt you will be able to curtail it. Cats will have to learn when they can and can't move around. My Grandfather had a cat killing dog, once everything settled down all he ever got was kittens.

Maybe bring a cat in the house and get them used to them?

When we first got our cat as a kitten, we were worried that the dog would eat her, so we kept them apart for a week or so, then introduced them slowly by holding the cat and having the dog come into the room.

Now they are best pals. Dog is an a-hole sometimes.

Sorry DK. No animals in the house. I live on a farm and couldn't imagine the mess we'd have in the house if we let the critters in the house.

I know it is one of the cats jobs to be chased by the dogs. Just wish they didn't have to kill them. Might be easier to train the wife to quit being friendly to the cats.

Man if you come up with a way to do this, you could charge for lessons and be richer than bill gates. Females and their dang cats

Edit: and...there is likely no way to untrain a dog once he sees something as prey. no way I've ever heard of anyway

Dogs hate cats

Your job to convince the dog certain cats belong.

DK..

I wish mine got along that well.

There's tolerance, but the dog is jealous of the cat, and the cat doesn't like the dog.

Breeds are different towards cats, IMO. My spaniel used to play with kittens as a pup, now he is old and "attacks" my cat regularly, makes a lot of noise but doesn't bite. Mouthed him once as a kitten when he tried to steal food right when dog was eating. It was one very wet but unharmed and clueless kitten.
My friend had a husky type dog - he would hunt cats down and tear them apart, I think he viewed it as his mission in life - no cure for that.

I have some experience with this

I love my wife's cats.

I'd say that even if she wasn't reading over my shoulder.

a couple things you could try

Frank's Hot Sauce. Spray the cats down with a back pack sprayer of FHS. Any cats that stick around will taste awful to the dogs.

A shock caller will work as well. It will be difficult to get on some cats, but when you hit the switch that cat will outrun any dog. don't ask me how I know>

Collect a few chicken feathers and when you find a cat carcass drop a few feathers and say in a loud voice. "Those Dang Owls again".

Try telling the dogs No! in a an authoritative voice.

BTW you can substitute cat for chicken in any Chinese food recipe.

hope this helps.

they both like each other. the cat looks mad because she was sleeping and the dog kept bugging her and eventually laid right on top of her.

some nights ill find the cat sleeping right beside the dog.

last night a neighbours cat came on the deck and cornered our cat and started beating her up, GF let the dog out and the dog tuned up the neighbours cat.

Thanks red. I always appreciate the voice of maturity and wisdom. Will all the above work for training the cat lady. Personally I think the dog is doing her job but the kitchen boss believes in peace, love and all the other stuff that goes along with "can't we all be friends".

Frank's red hot on the cats seems like marinade for a Thai chicken substitute. I should try the Frank's on my extension cords. It's amazing how many short cords I can get out of a long cord.

Take the dead cat and tie ot around the dogs neck so they cant get it off... after a few days of all humans avoiding them they hate it. Works with chickens at least... ps hope you dont have neighbors close by who can see it.

Your Rodent Extermination Contraption was dismantled by a dog?
Probably a defective model. Replace with upgraded version and carry on.

First time my dog met a cat, it didn't go over very well. Cat is more than twice the size of the dog, but the dog didn't have the smarts to back down. Cat was declawed and a helluva growling match ensued.

Once they start killing them they never stop. Only way to fix it is to not have cats or get rid of the dogs

Just my 2 cents

When I was choosing a breed, the breeder that I got my Drahthaar pup from told me that the life expectancy of a cat around an adult Drahthaar is usually measured in minutes. Since neither the Mrs or I have any use for cats, we were okay with that.

Tie the dead cat around the dog's neck for a few days, Worked like a damn when my buddy's German shorthaired pointer killed 10 of his neighbors chickens

Well the pressure is off. I don't know where the cat that is in the crematorium (fancy name for burn barrel) but all the kitchen boss's cats have been accounted for.
