Truer words have never been spoken! Certainly would be exhilarating to look into the bears eyes as it is charging you.

Assuming you actually hit the bear in a vital area, otherwise you just have an injured and PO'ed killing machine after you.

I don't get it. Of the 500,000 words in the English language why would anyone yell "Bear".
The bears don't understand the word, but if you are hiking with anyone else why would you confuse the issue.
The word "bear" should be reserved for when you actually see a bear or signs of a bear. Then you can warn your fellow hikers to take action to mitigate the threat.

If you are around me and yelling "bear" when none are around, expect a thick ear.
I believe the reasoning for talking is because nothing sounds like the human voice in nature. Hey Bear is just the example everyone gives.

Lucky guy for sure, I know the area he was mauled in and there's a few big bears down there for sure. ON a side note, there is an AMAZING gun store in Ennis...lol

Sorry about the stupid remarks I posted.
No I did not read the post, just the title.

Nester sorry about that. Thought it was you posting a halloween hoax.
Oct. and all.

Saw the same storey on Fox news this morning.

No joke about all this but I'm still waiting to hear about how it all started.

Hiker gets caught between the sow and the cubs ?

Or not. Griz hunt the hikers for alt. food supply ? In Montana.

?

Most likely will be a follow up story to explain how it happened.

It's all pretty well explained by the guy himself. Don't know what you're confused about.
Where do you read he was between the Sow and the cubs? Maybe read the account a little more slowly. Or at all.

Just took the time to read the story twice over.
Sorry Dave still waiting to hear what really made the sow attack.
Maybe she had humane confrontations before ?? Don't know.
Maybe He should have backed away when he first saw the bears but chose not
to ?? or approached ?
Don't know.

Yes that is true TM we only have blacks down here, but I know from all I have
read that you all have said about Griz up there. Yes they are aggressive, yes they will try to take your salmon/trout or elk you just downed and yes they will
guard their cubs. But you all have said also unless it's a rough bear or you happen to have food they want or are concidered a threat to their young. They simply do not attack you just becuase you are there.

How close he was to the bears to begin with would be a good question to be answered and why ?

Lot of hikers love to get pictures, could that be it ?

I wish to apologise.

This board had three posts about the same incident. (Bad bear) in Montana.

I quit after the fourth thread.

I truly wish some one would answer your question about the chimney on the barn?

Coupila?

Wind vane?

Thank you for following this board.

Your fine Purg.

I havn't checked back on the barn post, but happened to see picture of a
barn today that had what looked to be 6" stove pipe at the center of the roof.

(barn converted to a house)

That old barn don't look like they had any kind of stove originally. Think it could
have been added in later years or was simply the remains of original cooplia it
once had.

Can't tell by the pictures.

Wow, quite the story. That fellow is certainly lucky to be alive, though I'm betting he might not be feeling that way for awhile when the pain sets in.
Not sure what a lot of the posts on this thread are about. Fellow outdoorsman is attacked by grizzly and people making jokes about it?
Hope Mr. Orr recovers quickly.

FYI - Bears with cubs are complete wildcards. You never know what they are going to do. Regardless whether they are Blacks or Grizzlys. My brother encountered two black bear cubs while out in the bush. He didn't see the mom so he thought he would climb a tree to be safe, a big hoary spruce. The Sow came along, picked up his scent, and came up the tree after him. 5 times, down the tree, then back up. No provocation other than being near her cubs.

I have encountered a bear with a cub. One good holler and she and the cub took off.

Never assume anything when cubs are involved.

Also, if anyone is telling you that bears, blacks or grizzlys, will not attack you, unless provoked, ask them to prove it. I have read too many incidents to believe that for one second. Let alone to bet my life on it. Give bears tons of respect and take all precautions you can. If you are lucky, the bears will never attack unprovoked. If you are unlucky you may encounter one that never read that rule.

Ever hear of someone using a gun and saying "Dang!!! I wish I had bear spray! how about someone using bear spray saying "Dang! I wish I had a gun!"

Ever seen a bear turned by a gunshot that didn't hit it?

Yeah cuz 99% of all hikers, fishermen, campers, etc all hike in areas that allow guns and they're all completely proficient in placing a perfect shot within seconds of being charged.
Using your logic, he should've been carrying a rocket launcher or flame thrower. That'd be more effective than a gun, no?
Ever heard of a guy being attacked while carrying a flame thrower? Neither have I. It must work.

Internet warriors make me laugh. No matter the tragedy or the horrible incident, they could've prevented it in less time and with more proficiency than any victim out there.

Dang another grizzly attack this time in Wyoming. Scary Dubois is where my gf's dad goes for antelope hunting and I do believe that he and his brother in law and nephews are hunting that area this week. Hope everyone is ok!

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/10/04...n-wyoming.html

DUBOIS, Wyo. – A grizzly bear attack has seriously injured an elk hunter west of Dubois.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says the attack happened Sunday morning as the hunter went to get an elk he'd shot the day before in Shoshone National Forest.

Lander Region Wildlife Supervisor Jason Hunter said Monday the man noticed his elk had been moved from where he'd left it. He then saw an adult female grizzly with two older cubs and was attacked by at least one of them.

Other hunters heard the man yell for help. They told Game and Fish employees, who found the man and called for medical help.

Hunter says the man was hospitalized with serious injuries to his face and leg.

I've never been attacked by a bear but I have had some close calls, one where I am sure I was being stalked, by a black bear. This was in Archery season and we were hunting for Elk. A black was in the area and had showed us that he was unconcerned about us earlier in the evening. After dark as we came down from our tree stands he came in to us. We backed off and went and got the truck.

We came back the next day and if the bear had been around he would have died. We brought a rifle, we didn't bother with bear spray.

This is a crazy story, and also goes to show you that this is the digital age we live in. This guy has pieces of himself dangling off his body and takes the time to pull out his phone, male a selfie video, and upload it to his facebook.... wow.

He is hard as ****** though thats for sure.
