Title: Inspector
Reports to the Director of Compliance
Position Summary:
As part of a team of professionals located across Alberta, the incumbent will work with operators in Alberta to ensure that confined feeding operations (CFOs) follow the requirements under the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA). Inspectors also work closely with Alberta municipalities, livestock industry associations, and other government departments. This position responds to complaints about CFOs, follows up on ongoing AOPA permit condition requirements, performs inspections and follows up on environmental risk issues. The position requires both office work and travel in the field.
Responsibilities include:
AOPA
Respond to and investigate public complaints associated with livestock facilities, CFOs and manure management.
Address identified AOPA infractions in accordance with the Act, regulations and policies.
Carry out inspections, when required, to ensure compliance with permit conditions and AOPA requirements.
Recommend and take enforcement actions where necessary.
Prepare and serve documents such as compliance directives and enforcement orders.
Conduct environmental risk screenings of CFO facilities as required.
Record evidence and collect soil/water samples as required to support compliance decisions.
Follow up on AOPA permit conditions that have on-going or periodic requirements.
Follow up with CFO operators to ensure compliance with enforcement actions.
Assist Approval Officers with post construction inspections.
When required testify at Board reviews regarding enforcement actions taken.
Participate on teams supporting AOPA policy and guideline development.
Work with other regulatory agencies and government departments as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess a relevant Agricultural, Engineering or Environmental degree with a minimum 3 years of experience in related regulatory or environmental fields preferred.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Experience in a regulatory environment including, gathering information to support regulatory decisions.
Possess a good understanding of environmental risks related to agriculture.
Must be computer literate and have good word-processing, spreadsheet, and database skills.
Have an understanding or working knowledge of the confined feeding industry
Membership or entitlement to membership in a related professional society.
A combination of experience and qualification will be considered.
