Default D.E.W.S. Kicks Off in Edmonton

Well, you can't say the City of Edmonton isn't innovative. First there's this this "Road to no Collisions" initiative that I personally don't agree with, because all it seems to do is gridlock traffic and frustrate drivers who just want to drive along without unnecessary delays and aggravation.
Today the city started their Dog Early Warning System (D.E.W.S.) program. Bassically, when you buy or renew a dog license, you can get a free bandana to hang off the dogs collar. A Red Bandana means DO NOT APPROACH. A Yellow Bandana means CAUTION. A Green Bandana means FRIENDLY.
There is a lot more to the system, and you can get a brouchure or google it for all the details.
I spent a lot of time at the Hermitage off leash area, either walking a dog or fishing the NSR. Ussually dangerous or aggressive dogs are leashed or don't come there at all. As for all the dogs running around loose, I normally don't have any problems, unless they are stealing my bait. I'm willing to wait a while and see how this system works, but I doubt it will last long. Time will tell. One thing that "jumps" out at me, is what happens if a dog wearing a green bandana bites someone, or attacks another dog. Is the city partly liable?
It's All Good In The Hood. GO OILERS GO.

P.S... Teach your kids that they should never approach or try and pet a strange dog without the dog owner's consent.

Edmonton seems to come up with the most useless ideas.

I live here and totally agree. While good in thought, will every aggressive dog owner use it? Like mentioned, what if a so called friendly dog bites? Lots of friendly dogs meet the wrong person in the wrong situation and go nuts.

I wouldn't use them only because I cringe at all the goofy stuff people dress their dogs up with

My dogs were super friendly to all comers, only a collar with tags and a leash. That was their fashion statement and I controlled how close they got to someone. I have never been a fan of an off leash area, not sure why as it seems like a good idea. All my shorthairs got free run space as they needed, just not in that setting.

Would you expect anything less from our provincial capital?

Edmonton did not come up with the Idea, but they are the first to sign on.

D.E.W.S is a private company pushing this idea.

Brigitte Blais is the founder of Dog Early Warning System (D.E.W.S), a company out of Okotoks. For about three years she has been educating the public about her bandana system and volunteering in the community.

Okotoks and Calgary passed on putting it in play although they supported the idea if owners wanted to participate with D.E.W.S directly

So only Edmonton was foolish enough to implement this. No surprise at all.

Put a blue bandana on your dog.
Tell anyone who asks it means "aggressive leg humper"

Red bandana dogs get shot on sight by EPS. Good start.

Is this DEWS mandatory in Edmonton?

DEWS is not mandatory in Edm. They only started off with 100 bandanas, and I was told that they are only giving them to the owners of larger dogs. Not really sure how they decide who can have one, but they are actually quite nice bandanas.

I would guess the trans-dogs (ones who identify as cats) wear a leopard print bandana like a baboushka?

Ah yes, because the losers with bad dogs in my neighbourhood: A) love going to city hall to pay taxes/fees for their unlicensed dogs; B) love being told what colour bandana to wear (it could clash with the gang colours!) and C) just generally respect the etiquette of the dog park.

Not sure where you got this info from,
Please site your source.

According to the D.E.W.S own website, its at the owners discretion

http://www.dews.ca

It even says a red bandana doesn't necessarily mean the dog is vicious, but that the owner decided they don't want people around the dog.

Red Bandanas
Red means DO NOT APPROACH! Notice that red does not mean that the dog is necessarily aggressive. It means that for their own reasons, the owner does not wish for their dog to be approached THAT DAY. The owner may want uninterrupted time to themselves, or their dog may be: in training, old, injured, sick, post surgery, or submissive, requiring protection from overly enthusiastic encounters with other dogs, children, or adults.

Yellow Bandanas
A yellow bandana means CAUTION! The owner is open to interaction but asks that you first obtain permission and instructions from a distance before interacting with their dog. Dogs with yellow bandanas may not like people wearing hats or may prefer to be approached in a certain manner.

Green Bandanas
A green bandana means that the dog is known to be FRIENDLY, and would love some attention. But remember… Even the friendliest dog may have unknown triggers, and should still be treated with measured caution so… Always ask for permission before approaching any dog!

Let me offer another perspective.

My lab was super friendly as a pup and young adult and would happily meet any dog she encountered. However, once she became elderly her bones and joints hurt to the point where she was 'grouchy' with other dogs....I think mostly because she was fearful that a younger/stronger dog might try to wrestle/hump/bully/play with her and cause more pain. Because of this, she became less friendly and would often lash out at younger aggressive dogs.

Some sort of system where I could have signaled 'no thanks' (red or orange) to other owners could have been useful, and saved my elderly and achy dog some stress.

But to each their own...

Just in case post 20 was directed at the info I provided to start this thread, here is a pic of my "source ". This is the info sheet that is handed out to people and it is from the City of Edmonton. If it is different from some website, then so be it. Actually they look pretty well the same to me. Pic on next post

Great.... Now i can't send a pic of info sheet. Anyways, you can pick up the info sheet at city hall or animal control. I could text pic to someone and they could post it, if you think it's necessary.

Can't find anywhere that the city of Edmonton has initiated this,
Someplace where as a dog owner I can find more details, about this.

Other than the D.E.W.S website.

Ok thanks,

My licences come up for renewal shortly, I always pay online.

I have a rottie, and wanted to see if she would be given a colour based on her breed and not her behaviour.

I tend to keep her from strangers anyways because of the stigma attached to certain breeds.

That's why I was looking on city of Edmonton website and couldn't find it, or anything in the media.
