Default Custom 7mm Rem Mag

I finally have my new custom 7mm Rem Mag finished. The trued M700 Long action is mated to a Gaillard 1-9" twist barrel measuring 26", built by Dennis Sorensen. The bolt uses a Gre-tan firing pin assembly and the factory trigger tuned to a crisp 2.5 lbs. I bedded the entire assembly into a Bansners (High-tech) stock that I finished and painted with dura-coat and then textured. The match reamer was designed by Kiff specifically for long 160-180 grain VLD bullets. Finished rifle comes in at 7lbs even, and is 8lbs 2 ozs as pictured with VX3 4.5-14x40 (not incl. bipod) - just right! I chose the cartridge to take andvantage of all the superb, crazy BC, VLD bullets offered in .284, and for the ammo that is easy to find, should I get stuck for some in Asia or Africa, or wherever we end up together. I still have dies coming, so as yet it is unfired, but it won't be long now...

Great looking and quality rig. The 7RM and VLD's are a deadly combination on game up to moose and PG. Next March, I plan on taking my eland and waterbuck with the same 168 VLD I used on other PG this past March. Will you be using it on spring bear?

No not spring bear. It'll be ready for this falls BC goat hunt and later whitetail and mulie hunts. Hopefully, find an elk too. Might take a run up to my sheep range with it, too.

What load are your using for your VLDs ? I want to use the slow burning powders to make the most of the 26" tube and heavy bullets, and have H1000, Retumbo and RL 25 to test. Tnx

My load is WW Super brass (which Lapua would make 7RM brass), WLRM primers, 69 grains of Retumbo and the 168 VLD seated .010" into the lands. Velocity averages 2950-60 and accuracy is around 1.5" at 300 yds for a 4 shot group. This load shoots around 1" at 100 yds.

Hope this helps.

Nice rig. Excellent choice for a cartridge too. I loaded my 300 mag with H-1000 and at max load the groups shrunk to 3/8 inch and had an extreme spread of 8 fps. So that is definately a good powder to try out for the heavy bullets. Let us know how she shoots.

Thanks guys. Looks like my powder selection should cover it - definitely leaning towards H1000 or Retumbo, but the RL25 shoots so well in my 300 RUM and 338 LM, that I'll have to give it a run too - gonna try both 168 Bergers and 162 A-max's for now.

Thanks for the offer on the shroud, but I have three M700 LA stainless bolt actions; this black shroud ensures I don't mix them up.
