Default 22" or 24" 30-06

Is there any ballistic advantage to the 24" barrel in a 30-06? Once you look for the 24" barrel your choices go way down.

Thanks

Brad

On average, the extra 2" of barrel will add approximately 50fps to 60fps.

30-06 runs fine with 22" barrel.

It would just be a matter of balance for me. If it felt good then 18-26" would be fine. As for speed, not enough difference to justify one over the other. If you need faster get a 300.

I'm happy with a 22" barrel. Gun seems the proper length. I would not go shorter than 22 though in the .30-06 but ideally a 24" would be "best"

If I wanted to get faster speeds I would choose a 300 win mag and put on a 26" tube and get em into the 3000's instead of the high 2000's.

In a 22" barrel I've pushed 168 grain bullets at 2815 fps with a max load.

22" is great on a .30-06

If you want to squeeze it for all it worth then the extra 2" will give you 50fps more but in reality its insignificant. As the other post said, if you want to push the same bullet faster then get a .300 mag.
