I've been north of Hinton on the maze of roads that are in there.
As for Elk i'd run the lease sites looking for tracks.
Its a good place to start.
Pack extra gas my buddy and I ended up putting on almost 600 km in a day took a wrong turn on a ring road, we got where we wanted to but it took an extra hour.
Oilfield Atlas would help you.
