I personally have a compact saw that meets my needs perfectly. You can find what I'm talking about from this source . Generally, when it comes to small chainsaws, Husky and Echo have some decent saws. Echo's are heavest for the horse power, with Husky next.

My main saw is a Stihl MS290, a beast, I just don’t want to tote it around for the trail cutting I have planned.
Anyone know of a sale on anywhere for a cheapie unit?

I have an old Poulan Micro XXV with a 14" bar you can have it if you want. Things old, 35yrs or better, but still runs, just needs a little tlc. Can pretty much run it with one hand it's that light and small. Used it just the other day to trim some branches on trees in the yard, couldn't believe it started right up, hadn't been run in a couple years.

I have an old 14" bar Homelite that my wife's Dad gave to me before he died. I've cut many a cord of firewood with it when I had actual wood burning fireplaces. Had it stored away for the last 15 or more years. The gas was gone, evaporated away as I didn't pay much heed to it. Sat for 15 or more years. My neighbour wanted to cut down a 10" or so tree so I dug it out, filled it with gas, checked and brushed off the air filter. Touched up and tightened the chain. 5 or 6 pulls and it was back in action. Far from high end, but still impressed me.

Finished it, took a full day for 2 of us, followed up with a swisher cutter too.
Thanks for the recommendations folks.

For those who have replied they have a Ms170. My big saw is a ms291 and have been helping my dad cut firewood the past 2 days and m longing for a smaller and lighter saw to limb. Reading reviews online it’s kinda 50/50 about if it is a reliable saw or not. Any major issues with it if you keep it in it’s own rights? Found a killer deal on a used one and if it’s there this coming Tuesday when I head to town me thinks I’m going to get it. Have been looking for a smaller saw and this looks like it will fit the bill!

The Sthil MS260 or newer 261 are class A saws, smallest Professional they make. With proper care, will outlast the user. Check Kijiji, they come up for sale somtimes.

X10 stihl 170 or 180 is a great saw for the money. For a 2nd saw that doesnt get much use, run Aspen or similar 2 stroke fuel. Fuel will last a couple years and if your worried about smelling like 2 stroke, that aspen fuel smells amazing when it burns.

The MS290 is a 56CC saw that weighs 13 lbs (powerhead only) and its rated at 3.8 hp
The MS260 is a 50.2CC saw that weighs 10lb 9.3 oz rated at 3.5 hp.
I've had both saws and the 260 does the trick nicely. Being a pro grade saw they're better built and lighter but with nearly identical power. Throw a slightly longer bar on it and you can save some bending over when you're limbing a felled tree, say a 20" or 21" bar. I've still got a 16" (or is that an 18"? ) on mine but would like to grab an upgrade/spare one as an option.

I’ve had my MS 170 Stihl for 10-12 years I’d guess? Been a great little saw, I use it mostly for cutting coral planks and fence construction.
Not a heavy duty unit at all, lots of plastic parts but it is light and handy, relatively easy starting.
My next saw will probably be cordless electric, Milwaukee I’m thinking.

Spot on, absolutely the right answer for clearing small saplings and brush, willows and the like.
Oops, didn't read the second page, see you are done already.

For saplings, I just use my Stihl brushcutter with a saw blade attachment . No Bending over.

They're currently advertising the 170 to include the case, chain, and whatever for $259.
Maybe the $199 is saw only?

I've had my MS170 for 13 years... great saw, light, small, and lots of jam, When my big saw has issues, this is my rescue saw, and has never let me down
