Default 222 Rem

Anyone shoot/reload/hunt with a 222 rem? Like to hear if it is a worthwhile calibre? looking at 223, 221 Fireball or 22-250
thanks!

I have shot one since I was a little kid. It was the first gun bigger than a 22LR that I shot. Hell...I could probably even find the tree I shot it at years ago!

They are a GREAT little gun. Perfect gun IMO for coyote fur saving and having a bit of knock-down power. No recoil, very accurate round and fun to shoot. Factory ammo is a bit expensive vs a 223 but for a handloader thats a moot point.

Love the little 222Rem.....

My father has had his 222 rem mod 788 since he was a teenager. still shoots awesome great gun great caliber. I have a 223 rem. mod. 700 shoots great, just a little faster than the 222. The 223 ammo is a little more plentiful.

I use one Nice to reload Easy to reform from .223rem if you want Lots of .223 brass kicking around In process of reloading 1500 rounds for springs gopher shoot.
Wore out original barrel after some 10,000+ rounds replaced with Galliard barrel Shoots like a charm again. In the gopher patch.......shoot 50 rounds clean repeat .

222 REM is (was) a great calibre in its' day but it was surpassed long ago by the 223 REM. Not even sure if any company still chambers a factory off the shelf rifle in 222. If you are just starting out, a 223 REM is superb. Very accurate, cheap to shoot and reasonable for noise. If you want a longer range (over 300 yard) varmint calibre, go with a 22-250. But remember that it uses a lot of powder and is very loud. Both 223 & 22-250 use .224 diameter bullets.

I bought a Sako 222 in 1984 and still own it and love shooting it. A 223 would probably make more sense these days, but a 222 would be a good choice if you reload. A 50 gr bullet at 3100 fps is quite an effective varmint cartridge out to 250 or so yards.

My 222 is an old C.I.L. OEM by Anschutz.
it is a super sccurate rfle and i have owned it since the early 70's
I nevr did a lot of target shooting with it, but it has printed less than 1/2 MOA with handloads, ans 1/2 MOA with factory stuff.

I use it as a walking varminter.
the .222REM is abvout 100 yards short of the max distance of .223, but it handloads down better for close range beavers, etc.
The two .223's i own are long distance guns, one a varmint rifle and the other a limited production irons match rifle .
They bothn have fast twists for long bullets.

I own two sako 222's,one hb and one sporter.I go a long time without shooting them and then when i do i realize how much fun they are.VERY accurate and so much fun to smack gophers with.Being able to watch all the action thru the scope is priceless.
