The only fella that I like is the guy with his own plane and trapline in Alaska.

I think that Yukon Men (Thursdays on the Discovery Channel) is a much better show.

Shows on History and Discovery channels are getting dumber and dumber every year. I love the outdoors, hunting and trucks but shows like Mountain man, the hunt, Ice road truckers, swamp people and a pletora of other shows are all made in the same format with that fake suspense added to captivate the audience. It doesn't do it to me and I just can't get into them because of that.

The worst character is useless from the Appalachian Mtns...that guy drives me crazy. Marty is great to watch. The guy with the dogs is another moron, he just tries to make a pile of drama out of nothing... And the old timer from Montana is alright...not too sure he's a real Mountain man...seems like he lives life with all the perks most of us do,but he is pretty talented with making bows ,snow shoes and other tools...

Only watched the first season. Couldn't get over the idiot Eustace guy. Riding his horse through traffic to go fight his massive tax bill since he's sitting on a pile of land and just selling a bit of firewood and apparently sleeping with a bunch of ugly stoner girls.

I liked seeing the trapper from Alaska. Loved his plane with the tundra wheels. Was amazed when he landed on a mountainside while hunting sheep for his family. That's the life.

Now the only TV shows I watch are Vikings and MeatEater. MeatEater especially is fantastic.

Isn't it a comedy show?????

Ok, seriously, I have only ever watched bits of a few episodes. The old guy from Montana is ok, could be my cousin. Basically lives a bit like I do, in the country, hunt, fish, do a lot of things the old way.

Hardly being mountain men though in the 1880's definition.

By the 1880's, mountain men were 40 years in the past.

Life below zero is much better. However the lady with the air strip drives me absolutely nuts. Makes it seem like every second of every minute is life or death.

I don't mind any of those shows. Ya some characters I could do without;however, I like to think of it this way, if these shows weren't on the air, what would be? Veggan TV? C'mon... At lease they are portraying people who promote a lifestyle which many dream of or know little about. Better this than the alternative I say...

I don't know why they don't just do a show of Marty and people like him. I'd watch that for sure.

Like it for the most part... but the guy with the dogs is just stupid, and his plots are completely fabricated. The episode where he 'chased' the wolves off, the wolves they showed running were completely CGI, damn near cartoonish. Same with the 'grizzly' that we didn't see and he fired into the air and scared it off.
These networks work to hard at making something out of nothing.

Default Mountain men

I get a kick out of the rube with the dogs, especially when he gets all stressed out about someone hunting "his" cougars. Old Useless from the Appalachian Mountains reminds me of an old draft dodger/pot head/nut case.

Utter and complete TOSH.

Even the new one, The Hunt, they have to throw in the soundtrack of a bear roar every few seconds to the point of being udderly absurd...otherwise it would be boring as watching paint dry..

Stooooooopid

Try to give all these shows a fair shake but they all come up short. Cue the dramatic music, voice over and unsurvivable timed situations these people face minute to minute living up north.

Alaska Bush People ....is the latest one that caught my eye....just a waste of time like the rest. Scripted drama.

Default My life needs background music

Ya see, I lead a fairly normal life, no high drama, reasonable risks...not a lot different than most folks featured on Discovery channel - like the guys that drive tow trucks, or live in the bush (avoiding "society") or pulling nets in a fishin boat or slinging pipe on a drilling rig say.

But if my life had background music, my every word would be suddenly interesting, every observation would be more keen; I could go from being an average slob to a brilliant one.

Many of these Discovery channel shows follow the recipe of taking boring folks doing boring stuff, add in background music (or bear snarls in the case of The Hunt) and voila, instantly interesting.

I've lost track of how often I fall asleep watching them...too often.
