That would have been 25 years ago, when he was working out of his basement. One of my shooting buddies was with me at the time and we both remember the conversmation very well. Neither of us knew any different at the time.

According to the media if you own a rifle with a scope, it's a sniper rifle, therefore owning a sniper rifle makes you a sniper. That amounts to a lot of snipers.

What kind of math can be done to determine if someone is a sniper? Or was he claiming to be a sniper in a specific conflict?

Snipers like most rangers and sf guys I met & knew when I was in the army didn't talk about their jobs or what they did. Very humble people. If you did get them talking they didn't brag or talk themselves up, generally they would credit other people as having more important roles in the military or say hey if you ever wanna give it a shot you can do it just put your mind to it. even now if I hear someone who says right off the bat they were a shooter or a ranger or sf etc.. I tend to realize they a, washed out of training b, got kicked out c, were a support unit that never were qualified or d, full of bs. Generally all of the above applied.

My platoon warrant officer on dp1 was us army ranger qualified as well as master sniper. My current platoon warrant is advanced sniper. He's also instructed basic courses as well. They're out there.
Half the guys that claim they know a guy yada yada probly couldn't pass basic recce. It's a real gut check and I can't wait to get onto basic recce course

It is not about knowing a sniper it is about all the posers out there who profess to be ex snipers ,military or LE, big difference !

Our army is very small. We only have 3 combat infantry units that would fill the role of sniper. (excluding CANSOF and those assigned to the school)
Members can become a sniper, serve in the cell and then on staffing requirements, promotions etc rotate out to other positions. Some are lucky to get back and the majority are not.
So you may have a lot of guys who were trained as a sniper and were able to do a stint, very few, lucky few were able to stay for a length of time in an operational capacity.
A master sniper sniper isnt a qualification in shooting skill. It is the platoon
Warrant or Sgt who oversee's the snipers, their training and deployment etc. Which is a skill set all on it's own.

A quick browse thru the AO guns and ammo forum would suggest that there are at minimum hundreds if not thousands of expert snipers just in Alberta alone,lol.
How many of those are actual "military" trained snipers is anybody's guess,but apparently there is no shortage of know-it-all expert marksman that regularily shoot WTs at 700+,running coyotes at 400m,and gophers by the dozen at 350m all day long.

Dad went through sniper training course at suffield in the 80's. Afterwards he spent some time on rooftops in Cyprus doing embassy protection duty. Not sure if that makes his a certified "sniper". But he can free hand a 500m target with my old sks iron sight and ring the gong way more reliably than anyone else ive seen......

And all these shots were with a .22! (not the deer of course)
