Default 338-06 ammunition

Has any one come across any 338-06 ammo? I have a rifle on order and would like to stock up. Thanks!

Pretty much a reloaders cartridge, weatherby used to make brass I believe. Most just neck up 3006 brass.

X2 to what buvkbrush says. Its super easy to make brass, but before I started forming my brass I also bought 5-6 boxes of weatherby factory ammo to have some with the proper head stamp.

Nosler makes it in the A-square, as does Norma. as stated, its more of a reloading/wildcat round.

I'm pretty sure I saw some at wss in calgary a few weeks ago. Don't recall the brand but it was mixed in with the weatherby barnes and nosler shelf. One of those three. They did have two boxes of barnes vortex in 45-70 if anyone is interested. $80/box - too rich for my blood

Weatherby made some -haven't seen it on shelves for a few years now. I did not know Nosler made factory ammo for it. I know they have brass. I use Norma and weatherby head-stamped 338-06AS brass for my 338-06AI version with 225gr ABs and TTSXs

Thumbs up 338-06 load data

What a great cartridge the 338-06

With the 210gr Nosler Part makes one dandy elk rifle
Using the 225gr Part makes a good moose and black bear rifle

To me the one if the biggest reasons i chose the 338-06 was its so easy to form from cheap 30-06 brass i wont pay extra for a headstamp but i also made sure i sold my last 30-06 before i built this one to avoid confusion

What a great cartridge it performs beyond its size

When you travel to foreign countries, not having properly headstamped ammo, may cause problems at the airport police station.

Have you run into this yourself? I never thought of that but also never hunt out of country either so never really crossed my mind

That is the exact reason I bought 50 pieces of Norma 338-06 head stamped brass
It will often cause problems...

Main reason I went headstamped 338-06 brass was because I was reloading for a friend's 30-06 and rather not have any issues, plus I scored a great deal a few years back on the 338-06 new brass.

I used properly headstamped ammo. However, in preparation for travel, reading different references and Internet forums, it is not unusual to have an inspector seize ammo that is not headstamped for the caliber stamped on the firearm.

Flying to South Africa, my firearm was inspected in Calgary, upon arrival in Johannesburg, upon leaving Johannesburg the next day, and upon arrival in East London. I needed an export permit from Canada, a transit permit for Amsterdam, and a guest permit for South Africa. These are all checked at various times. Flying back it was the reverse, except I needed a second permit to transit Amsterdam.

The airline and nations allowed ammo, in a locked box, to transit in checked luggage. On the way home, I was made to check my ammo case as an additional piece of luggage. According to my study, this was not required, but when a guest in a developing country, you go with the flow. It is easier than getting bailed out of the jail. Fortunately, I had spent extra on a Pelican case for my ammo, rather than a MTM I had previously purchased. The ammo case survived the journey. I was not charged for an extra bag.

My advise after my only trip so far, is to leave nothing to chance and try to eliminate the potential for any dispute with an inspector in any country you transit.

The trip was well worth the effort and I look forward to doing it again as soon as possible.

I've been looking everywhere. I came up with 4 boxes. If anyone sees anymore I'm still looking. I struck out at the calgary gun show a few weeks back.

Time to start reloading I'd say.

Nosler makes brass. Maybe they will custom load up rounds for you as they mention this service on their website.

Be cheaper and more fun reloading on you own, but to each their own.

There are still a few Weatherby .338-06 cases floating around and there are/were a couple of boxes of Nosler Brass at WSS a short while back. AFIK Norma makes the Brass for Nosler. Better hurry, as I hear mortgage rates are going up .
