Default Achtung Baby

And now for something completely different! buddy showed me pics of the stringer of fish he caught yesterday so I decided to try the same spot after work today. First time catching these things, so I decided to use one of my ice fishing rods just because Im different The little guy I even caught by hand when the current washed it close. I was using 1/0 hooks, smaller would have got me more for sure. Fun on light gear, my tomatos are going to be happy. may do it again and put some on a stringer for the smoker one of these days. I saw literally dozens, when they were in shallow I couldnt tell if I had a bite there were so many close together the rod never stopped moving.

next time Im taking my big salmon landing net, I could have filled pails with them its crazy. best part was watching a guy pull out 4 pike back to back that would have probably totalled at least 80 pounds. and he released 3 of them so I was impressed. These things swam literally close enough to touch, I tried to grab a couple big ones but they are slick as goose poop. did poke a few with my fishing rod and its not very long! I think the rivers may be in big trouble if they are this thick everywhere

Wayne - back in the 70s my Dad "made" me catch a bunch of Suckers for his garden.
Skunks (and maybe Coons ) dug up all the plants to get at the fish.

Just a heads up if your garden isn't fenced well.

yah had the same problem with cats digging up suckers in one of my gardens so I had to put a trampoline net around it these ones I will bury in my greenhouse. Guess I should mention these are the Frikkin invasive Prussian Carp that are taking over our rivers. Killemall!!!!

Great catch! Looks like you had a lot of fun.

Especially like that you used your hardwater rod, just to change things up a little!

I was just using little garden worms. I was seriously hoping one of the big pike would take one I was reeling in but no luck. yet definitely have to try for them again, maybe with a flyrod and worm next time. just like perch fishing only a whole lot fatter and limitless Buddy was using a heavier weight and a bit further out and he filled 2 pails with them. I just wanted to give them a go. definitely a lot of fun!

Try eating them. My mom used to cook up the suckers we brought home in a curry sauce then over rice. Found this on you tube.

It's hard to imagine that those Prussians aren't sucking up piles of sturgeon eggs off the rocks.

Get the net out Wayne. No need for a bucket, just treat them like a bunch of week old pickup sockeyes.
It probably won't help the sturgeon, but it will at least make you and me feel better.

I caught a 12 pound walleye with a big one whole in its gut. Im thinking even a gimpyeyed old fart like me could hit a fat fish 4 inches away from my feet with a fish arrow. better take my steel toed boots I guess! I really hope they arent eating dino-eggs but the current where they spawn is pretty intense when they are using it. If not even millions of more reason to kill the carp

They look well fed, cut a few open to look at the stomach contents, curious to see what they are eating.

Nice haul Wayne.

Doe anyone know if they are here in the NSR?

It is really sad that the only reason we have to deal with these fish is the bucket brigade. They were a rumor a few years back, now established. Crazy.

I am not sure if they are here in Edmonton, been out of the fishing game for a while and just trying to get back into it.

If the north sask has them, I would be more than willing to try and yard some out.

Gotta be some meat on those nice big carps. I'd like to try them smoked. Just pick away at them, sippin a beer. I did a batch of big boney smoked suckers once and everyone loved them. Finger food, smoked like pork jerky.

A bit of chum and a cast net would be effective.
