460 Weatherby loads
Finally got around to playing with the 460 wthby. Loaded up a bunch of 400 grn speers pushed by 100 grn of H380, lit by Fed 215 primers. About 1/3 of the rounds were hangfires. The ones that lit properly were nice to shoot. I also used the same data and loaded the 3 500 grn bullets I had. They seemed to fire with hesitation. Not so nice on the shoulder though.
Anyone have a pet load for this cartridge? Gopher season is coming again in a few months!

What does that work out to? $5.00 a shot? Will stick to the 22 or 223 Thanks.

I use 450 and 500gr bullets in mine. I know that 110gr of H4350 is a full case with a hornady 500gr. I have a hard time getting that into the case if I use barnes tsx or banded solids. The same load with the 450's is milder and gives me 2" 5 shot groups. I could do better with some tweaking and more time on the bench, but It was sighted in and its hunting season now. I have also tryed H414 but ran out of case capacity also. I have had no hangfires in this gun but I also figure its short on capacity. I need a 460 improved
Since I got my 460 I have no elephants in my back yard.

I looked up your load and it was a recomended starting load. Unless you have old powder or primers then I don't see why it should hangfire. If you have some 4350 give it a try. 112gr of H4350 was a bit milder to shoot than the 380 load and I bet it won't hangfire. I went down to 90gr in a 416Rigby with 350gr speers with no issues and the case is almost as big. Maybe 380 is hard to start?
I like my 460 enough I am looking for another

Thanks PoppaW.
I think I've got a can of H4350. Won't last long, lol.
Mine is in a rechambered Ruger #1, it's been magna ported. It really isn't too bad to shoot. I've shot a 416 rem in a 700 that was way worse.

I'm always short on powder Mine is ported also. No brake. It suposed to be max 20% recoil reduction but without cutting the end of the bbl off I will never know. I do know that you can tell the difference from 450's to 500's right away. A 500 @ 2525fps gets your attention fast. I'm taking mine moose hunting tommorow. Last time out I saw the moose but he saw me first.
Good luck with the gun. My first 416 Rigby was a no.1. I like those single shots. I used mine for about 5-6 years and got my biggest moose and whitetail with it.

Wow I cant believe the flame coming out of this gun and its daylight out!!!!Thanks for showing these two pictures.I'm starting to think that Now I want to buy a big cartridge.I have a couple grand saved up for either a 240 Wby or a 7mm wby mag,now I want a 460 wby after seeing these pictures.Do you think that a 460wby would have flare in the daylight like your buddys 458win? I know that them falling block actions on the rugers are as tough as they come and can handle extream pressure's.

I don't think that .458 is a Number 1 is it, looks like a bolt handle visible over my hand, I know my memory is a bit shaken after firing those cannons, but I seem to remember it being a bolt action, although I'd guess it is a ruger.

Darnit Scar it's my story and I'm sticking with it!!! Now go eat a sandwich.
Actually I stand corrected. Had to call it's owner and confirm. It is a Model 77 Ruger.
Must have shaken my melon a little harder than I thought.

Sweet rig Ice!! I don't have a break just the magna port. She only has iron sites, could use a four power or less someday though. The 400 grn loads I listed were fairly pleasant to shoot. The 500s were a bit snotty but managable. Pretty fun firearm to putter around with. Scar270 has a pile of 500 grn cast gas checked bullets kicking around his loading room, some night when he's not looking a pocket full of them will be mine(if I can carry that many). That will make for some inexpensive plinking fun.
Thanks for posting your load, the concensus seems to be H4350. Next loading session I'll be trying it out. A range session is also in order to see just what she'll do. So far all that's been done is with it is BOOM, Giggle, giggle. Sorry about the analogy, just got done reading Giggle Giggle Quack to my three year old.
That is a pretty good arty blast above the gopher. I'm thinking in the spring we need to have a Big Bore gopher shoot. 40 cal and over!

Oh sure, make me leave the .375 at home, thanks!
Oh well so far the .45-70 with the 500gr cast has been working out ok, too bad I can only get 1700fps out of it instead of 2500fps like you guys.
Maybe I'll have to go shopping before spring.

I was going to make it 375 and over. Thought I'd make you whine a bit first though.
Alright, 375 and over, now you have an excuse to go get some jacketed bullets and quit shooting them with solids.
How was the sandwich? Noticed in the pic you are getting a bit thin!!!!

Well I'll bring a couple solids in case they try to hide in their holes. I didn't get a sandwich, I went home for lunch, but I'm going out for lunch today so I'll get fed.

460 Weatherby
I was using some CCI primers for a 300 rum load I was working on & had several hang fires. I switched to Remington primers & have had no issues since. Could be a problem with CCI quality control.

I've got a truck load of 9 1/2mag rem primers that was going to be the next try. Every book I have says the Fed 215 is the go to primer for this cartridge.
Scored a box of 500 grain factory solids today in a small town hardware store, couldn't believe it, couldn't believe the price either. Reloading the few rounds fired out of this boomer has once again paid for my reloading setup.

Back to your original question and away from the "460 Lovefest" lol (I want one as well ) sounds to me like you have a powder issue, might be damp or something to that effect. PoppaW has some good advice and some experience with his 460 loads. I believe he uses federal 215 primers in his recipe, I doubt its the primer issue unless they were damp as well.
Just my 2 cents

The powder thing had crossed my mind too. But I'm doubtful that is the trouble. I pulled the seal off to load the ammo, it was a brand new can. The can has only been in my magazine for about 6 months. As for the primers that is a definite possiblility. I don't recall where they even came from. They "look" fine but who knows. I'm going to try the Remingtons on the next batch, with a different powder.
I used it to put down a neighbours cancer eyed cow today and had the worst hang fire yet. That being said she didn't suffer.

Or I could just make 410 and larger shotguns legal. Wonder if the wildman would bring his 8 gauge and slugs out of the safe? I'm sure someone would loan you a .416 rem, taylor,or rigby! I'd go with the rem such a pleasant experience!!
But purchasing another firearm is always a good move. With the registry being on life support, you could buy it and take it to the wake, sort of a celebration!

As for primers, the 215 was made for the big Weatherby case. In fact it was made for the 378. Same case. I think I would get a mean flinch if it started to hangfire. I miss gophers. They don't want to import them into the north. I did use my 416 Rigby #1 to take out a beaver and his house once. About 30 earth moving rounds and it was no more. I love these big guns.

I'm going to switch powders and try again. Will try some more 215s, 91/2rem, and have access to a few 215 from another batch.
Nothing wrong with varmint control using artillery. Even if you hadn't got the beaver, he probably would have taken the hint.
Did you get your moose yet?

No moose! In fact I didn't see any mule deer or WTD's or elk. It used to be thick with deer and moose over there. Now not so much. I might try my 460 on white tails if I get time.

I scored some H4350 and some different Federal 215s from a buddy today. Going to try the H380 with the different 215s, and load up some 400 grainers with 4350, and both sets of 215s just to try and figure out where the problem is. Bought another box of factory too, the 450 grn TSX'ers. Holy crap that stuff is expensive. They should work nicely on the zombie muley does in my zone. Up to 79 brass now should keep the elephants out of the yard.
Crappy about the moose PoppaW. Heard lots of reports on them down here in 200.
