Default What it is!!!

It is a Whirlaway it came out in the 1950's costing about $50.If I remember it has a spinning reel inside the ball and it releases by turning the handles slightly backwards, holdiing the line against the rodwith yourthumb cast normally as if you were using a spincast reel. They weren't all that popular back then.

Yep used one as a kid. I didn't own it but one of the adults who fished the same place did and let me use it from time to time. I think it sad Grat Lakes Tcle or something similar on it. at that time |I still ahd not seen a spinning reel. We used shakespeare and pflueger level winds.

They date to the 50's and were never really popular because they were complicated and expensive. Essentially they were an enclosed spin-cast reel like the Zebcos, et al. Doubt collectors would have much interest but who knows.

Looks like that early style of plastic. I'm not even sure what the name of it is.

Darn cool.

Do you mean Bakelite Dave? The same stuff the old rotary phones were made of. Not only do I remember them, I actually installed and repaired a few early in my career!

Default Old rods/reels

I actually was in an antique store in my hometown of Ontario back in October and I saw one of these (didn't buy it) but bought a whole bunch of old rods and reels for reasonable prices for decoration, I actually got a split bamboo fly rod for $20 in great condition!!!
