Default Gull Lake Report

Dec 15th …. Since I'm not going south this year I plan on working Gull over the winter. Went out to Brownlows, there were a few shacks out and people were driving out on the ice. Dragged my gear out, got set in 5 fow over busted up rock were Whites normally spawn in the fall. Was surprised with the ice thickness compared to Sylvan, obviously Gull froze over much sooner. It was a slow-slow day, seen my first White just after 9:00 am, slowly came it looked at my 4 w/w’s & swam off, not a good sign. Seen 5 Whites all day, they are twice the size of Sylvan whites, they all admired all my creations but wouldn’t even bump one, Pink Mag's didn't help, they slowly came in and left. Had 3 small Pike bugging me, 1 hit a flutter spoon the 2nd missed my w/w & got it on a bottom thumper. Didn’t see any Perch, Walleye or Burbs. Guys started departing around noon, spoke to 2 fellas, one seen a Burb the other seen 2 Whites, no fish today. Had a surprise visitor, Doug dropped in from R/D, came to see how thick the ice was, told me his ride was still younger than he was, we chatted for a while nice guy. Will have to try Sandy Point next time out.

A bunch of pic's … enjoy.

D.

No problem with the Lake Access

More Snow than Sylvan but still Slick

Z-z's 10” Drill is Super Fast like 1/4 Mile - 10 Sec or Less!

That's a lot of ice!

14.5” to the Top of the Hole

Custom Ride stayed close to Shore

Had a Fly By ….

Met Doug & his 1949 Piper … special visit.

Three Small Pike Bugged me most of the Day

Wacked him with Bottom Thumper it missed my w/w & got snagged.

Hopefully the fishin pick's up, those Whites sure are Big.

F***in Gull, man... It's been my nemesis since I got into ice fishing 5 years ago. Fished it 3 or 4 times and skunked every time. Unreal that there's 14.5" ice...

Quite a bit more ice at brownlowes than Wilson’s. 4-5 more inches. Getting sick of tugging sleds. Maybe brownlowes next.....

Hey Zip, I was out on the ice there yesterday as well. My Jeep was parked on shore. Saw the plane land and go over to talk to you, was wondering what that was all about, I thought he was gonna run my tent over haha!
I also had zero luck where I was, near the shacks that they were pulling out through the day. Had a couple little perch come through just after setting up the tent, one of them bit my tungsten jig but spit it out before I got him to the hole, then they were gone.
I stayed till probably 7PM, bite wasn't any better at dusk or after dark

Needed one for my Marcum camera, got it on E-Bay last year when I was in the USA, it's called a Iceberg 5" Mini Hand Ice Auger, unfortunately, the seller no longer carries them. Found one that's similar but no shipping to Canada.

Agreed it was a slow day, the highlight was meeting/chatting with Doug, that was a nice surprise. I went out on Sylvan today, seen over 20 Whites but didn't do that well, they don't compare to the size of the Gull Whites. Don't plan on giving up on Gull yet.

Wish you all the success this season.

Cheers

Jan 06th …. Sandy Point, was the first one on the lake and was surprised there was only a few perm-shacks out here.

It was a Bty warm day with no wind and no snow pack you can drive anyplace as there was no ice heaves or open cracks, nothing.

The numerous places I fished had lots of old holes, that said, there was only 5 vehicles out today in comparison to Brownlows this place was deserted.

Perhaps because not many are catching, I moved around a lot & drilled over 60 holes in 5 to 18 FOW & only seen 1 Perch & 1 Pike, it was a disappointing day, got blanked.

Not sure if I’ll go back to Sandy again this winter.

Some pic’s ….

D.

Sandy Sun Rise ….

Lots of Ice ….. 21” top Hole.

Was set up just after 8:00, in 5-6 FOW

Nice Bottom but No Fish.

Found the top of the Sunken Island but No Fish

Not many Shacks out here, Wonder Why.

We were up there last week and endured non stop ATVs and sleds. I can see why no one is catching much. I'd like to have a hydrophone to listen to the noise. Get away from the noise and I expect you would get a bit of luck. Even with the sonar I could see the distortion when something went by.

Fished out to the point of no return. Nothing worse than hunting for fish on a big, essentially featureless lake like gull. At least sylvan isn't as big, next winter you can do the loop and see a couple fish and pack er in by noon.

It's been awhile since I've been to gull lake. How many access points are to get on to the lake. Taking my daughter there tomorrow.
