It’s kinda just starting. Viz is still pretty good. Fishing is excellent. Road up there sucks. Lots of potholes.

If you are headed to Calling, watch for a massive heave in the pavement right before the bridge across the Athabasca River. Speed limit says 40 km/hr there, but if you do that you’ll likely get air.

There is algae starting in the lake. Fishing is still really good. Boated well over 100 fish yesterday.

The algae is non existent at the town site. But the waves on Sunday was pounding the shore and the water went from crystal clear to chocolate brown near shore.

No one could get out to fish in the 4 foot waves anyway.

But the water is high, the river is flushing out the lake, the inflow rivers are coming out of muskegs and the PH is off enough to keep the algae down anyway.

I watched a guy pull up to the launch on Sunday, load 4 kids in there that looked like they ranged from 8-16 years in age into a 14’ fiberglass early 80’s style ski boat and proceed to back them into the water. It only took about 4 seconds for that boat to land on the dock with the motor and the front end of the boat was bouncing off the trailer. I was so scared those kids were going to get caught up between the boat and the trailer. My buddy Ken was near by and ran out to the dock to help the kids off and push the boat off the dock. The youngest kids said thank you, the leader of the pack never said a word......

I was out on Sunday morning but got off by 11. Things were getting gnarly already by then. Fine on the water, but loading with 3 foot waves coming in at 45 degree angle is never fun.

Even in the WORST algae outbreak, just run up to the NW corner where the Rock Island River comes in. The river is tea coloured from running through the peat bogs and muskegs.

The water in the lake is algae free for about 1 mile off of the river because of the PH getting acidic from the peat bogs that the creeks and rivers run through.

This year a number of dry seasonal creeks are running, bringing in alot of tea coloured water. This will help with the algae. The high water level is also flushing out the lake this year which helps with the nutrient load that the algae depends on.

Calling has alot of rocky shores, not alot of mud, and not alot of weed beds other than coon tails.

Water was still pretty cool for swimming, which is a good thing. There is alot of driftwood washing up on the beaches, and alot of wood floating along shore this year, which is a bit different.
