That's ^ all well and fine, but ...

I've carried and used a 45-70 as well for many years now, but I take a quite different tack. In the 'off-season' it's only used as back-up for bear spray, and so far (20+ years) I've never had to use it for that purpose.

Govern yourself accordingly,

Mac

We can argue about how far a bear can go after being shot, but in reality, it's the "well placed" part I'd have trouble with as the bear is charging me.

Default statistically

If you shoot a bear there is a good chance you may kill it but it will likely maul or kill you before dying. angry hurt bears do not cease attacking and generally the injury intensifies the attack.
Bear spray interrupts the attack so other than some burning eyes no one gets permanent or fatal damage. Test results I read were based on predation attack polar bears where over 97% left scene while shooting resulted in 50-50% injuries to both man and bear.
the report I read was very old so maybe bears have mellowed somewhat and victims have gotten much better in the speed and accuracy departments under duress with a truck coming at you at 40 miles and hour.
Knives and grizzlies (or blacks) is even funnier.
