Default Wainwright 2nd rifle totals

Wondering what the 2nd rifle totals have been on the base. Was up for the 1st with my son, and by day 3 it was getting a bit tough to find the deer, but weather and crunchy snow didn't help much either.

Thanks for putting this hunt on.

We didn’t get anything, but we did see some deer and moose.

Day 1 we saw around 40-50 deer, almost all does. One 120-130” wt buck gave us the slip.

Day 2 we saw around 20-25 deer, mostly does but a few fork horn mulie bucks.

Day 3 we saw 8 deer. We saw 10 moose today too.

Seems like the hunting pressure is really getting to the deer. Absolutely nothing moves between 1hr after first light and 30 mins before last light. Most deer when they see a truck they take off 100mph. Crusty snow made it impossible to get out and stalk game. You could hear footsteps 200yds away through the bush.

The hunt is very well run, and Suffield could really take a lesson from these guys. We were treated like adults and felt welcome to be on the base. I will be coming back.

Rifle Hunt 2 summary. If you positioned yourself on travel routes and knew people were driving and pushing bush you were going to see deer. I was lucky enough to harvest a mule buck. Could have filled all 3 tags day 1, 2 or 3. Saw lots of moose and took a 3 minute video of approximately 200 plus elk coming back on to the base after their foray in the neighboring fields. All hunters took ribbing for such low numbers of deer being harvested day 1 and 2 and were reminded at the briefing what they looked like. Well run by all the staff and almost everyone involved were respectful of others. Base conditions were good and all was open except the standard permanent closures.

It was nice to meet a couple of fellow AO members as well.

hey gang. i am heading out the 16-18 to wainwright. Never been there before and I have to go by myself. Due to my hunting partners are not vacced.

I have read more walking than driving. Am I crazy doing this by myself in new surroundings. I brought along a calf sled to haul deer out to the truck if i am lucky enough to shoot one.

What other tools or equipment do you recommend i bring with me?

besides a heater cause its going to be freaking cold.

I found myself in the same boat as you as my partner had to pull out of the hunt late November. So it was too late to sign up a helper (Nov 15 deadline for that). I was reluctant to go on my own, getting older..., honestly wasn't too keen going on my own. Like you I had never been there. I did decide to go for the last part of the hunt. I enjoyed it, didn't fill any tags (could have on does, chose not to). Like you've read the deer are smart and walking around will likely be noisy.

My advice, go for it.

Any chance we can just let Shed post the DEER TOTALS on this thread, and start another thread about this occurrence? I'd hate to see Shed Hunter give up posting those hunt results.

Thanks for posting the totals again this year Shed, appreciate it as always.
I can imagine hunting conditions were tough for moving around with the crunchy snow conditions. Good on the hunters that adjusted their tactics and were successful!
To the Allen boys-karma always catches up to garbage like this that will stoop that low to get an animal. A public shaming is in order, post up more pics of these two "in action" like Giles did....

Haha no bucks stolen. Hopefully that’s the last one ever but I doubt it with some of the people that show up to these hunts.

Hi shedcrazy. Thanks for taking the time to post the numbers. I am curious if you happen to know if there are any wainwright hunters who managed to score a hat trick on deer this year since there was 3 tags provided per hunter (which has historically only been 2 tags).

Thanks

Thanks for the update Shed. Only 15 hunters on the final day of rifle 3? Tough conditions but man I would have loved to be there. Seems like the numbers are inline with other years considering the reduced number of hunters.

If by hat trick, you mean came home with three tags in your pocket. Then yes, I scored a hat trick. lol

It confuses me With so many trying to get into the base hunt and having a chance of taking a few deer as well as helping cull the numbers for the base ?
Its amazing the amount of trophy hunters wasting good priority and opportunity for others to have a chance at a harvest .
Why waste the time and effort for the possibility of the one trophy the base offers .
Let someone that wants to harvest a few deer have the opportunity.
Just a personal though as i seen the same thing when i was there 2 years ago , everyone waiting for the last few hours because nothing monster was available along the roadside.

IMO, I think the harvest % would increase dramatically if they held the hunt earlier in the fall. Many hunters already have freezers full from the September-November hunting seasons so they’re only hunting for horns.
It’s impossible to predict that when you apply for the draw in June……

We talked about this while we were there for Rifle 2. I think it would be cool if this was a Nov hunt or even earlier.

Either way its lots of fun ( at least i thought so ) and I would go back in a second. I was extremely impressed with how well run the hunt is compared to when we were in Suffield. Everyone seemed like they were genuinely happy to be there and didnt mind the hunters being on the base.

You need to understand everyone hunts with different personal goals in mind and really there is nothing wrong with that

From a management stand point this is taken into consideration when setting out a number of tags to stay within allowable harvest numbers. It is expected that a portion of tags would not be filled

Now if everyone hunted with the goal of taking any legal deer you would actually see less tags given out in the long run because they would not have to award as many to reach their management goals. This would lead to less tags being awarded giving less people the opportunity to hunt

Nothing wrong with hunters going out with different personal goals wildlife managers take into consideration some tags will not be filled for many different reasons

This is how things are in most cases anyway

I bet Shedcrazy would know more about the base’s management plan and goals

Agreed, even a late October hunt would be fun.
I also have always enjoyed my hunts on Wainwright. Well organized and friendly staff running it and a pretty diverse landscape to hunt over 3 days.

Thanks for confirming that Shed.
Hats off to you and the base for organizing and putting on this hunt over the years and sharing the harvest results with us......

the problem with guys not filling most (or all) of their tags is that the base will instead allow first nations to come in a take more animals. Then everyone will whine and complain that the FN get to be in there at different times and get to take whatever they want, etc, etc. This is a management hunt and the base has this hunt in order to keep deer, moose and elk numbers under control. Its not a trophy hunt.

FN is only allowed in there at the same time the draw hunt is run BTW.
