Thank you Shed. Although I’m still a couple years from returning, this hunt is one of my favourites and I look forward to the updates every year. Keep up the great work out there.

Just want to say thanks for the reliable information and numbers regarding this hunt it is appreciated

I have never hunted wainwright but the wife and I have been building priority to hopefully do so in the future. I read your posts each year to hopefully get a realistic expectation of this hunt

Shedcrazy would it be possible for you to post any pics of the terrain/bush on the during theses hunts. I also always hear warnings of drifted snow and to bring gear to help for getting un stuck. Is it really that bad or is it more of a warning to be prepared as you are responsible for getting yourself out of a jam?

Sorry if this would be considered as a derail from what you intended this thread to be

The terrain varies significantly
So much that a few pics won’t cover it all
Your own your own if you get stuck
Range patrol isn’t going to help you
So be prepared as if you were going hunting anywhere else

I’ve been out before and had to be chained up with a lifted one ton diesel and getting around was a risky proposition

Thanks Mark

Still curious on terrain more so the aspects of hunting and my OCD. Not a drive around and stumble on game kind of hunter. But I still have years before I could even draw a tag anyway

Sounds like just be prepared, use common sense, and don’t push your luck like you would on a remote hunt

Best thing would be to tag along with someone as a helper
Experience is your best friend on this hunt

You can have river hills that are virtually unclimbable to flat prairie
Clear open areas where you can see miles to bush that you can’t see 20 yards

Dont think you can this year due to COVID. Hopefully gets back to normal sooner rather than later.

48 hunters, 3 tags each per season.

52 deer taken during the PW season isnt too bad. I bet more are hitting the dirt during the current 1st rifle season.

So if someone applied for a wainwright tag, they received three tags? Antlered or antlerless? I'm a little confused, if someone could help me on this? Is there a cull happening there?

This hunt happens every year. It is a cull to keep the herds in check.

Tags are valid for any sex and any species. If you see a deer shoot it and tag it.

Due to Covid indoor gathering restrictions the amount of people allowed in check station is reduced. 50 deer licence holders with 3 tags. That is the reason for reduced hunter numbers nothing else. This is far from a cull as with over 5000 deer the running total of 75 deer does nothing.
Luckily there is a hunt this year. Enjoy and quit crying and whining about things you can’t control.
This hunt and threads brings out the best and the worst our community has to offer.

thanks for sharing Shed, I was wondering why they only handed out 48 tags. I though the number was 200 for each season in years past.

With only 50 hunters and three tags each that would be a great opportunity for someone that got drawn this year for sure!

I would enjoy seeing some pictures, if someone would care to share. Always nice to see some of the animals, or pictures of the country, when hunting season for most of us has ended.

Wow not as many as I thought. I figured that the total would be at least higher than PW season.

Lot of high priorities likely people chasing trophies resulting in lower harvest and not just in there to shoot a deer would be my guess. Be interesting to hear from some people who have been in the first two hunts and see if people are seeing better numbers then previous years!

Missed out this year, hopefully next year 🤞

Deer numbers seemed fine. Very spread out, lots in the thick nasty stuff. The snow was really crunchy and I know we would have shot a couple more deer if it wasn’t for that/ being picky about shot angles. We had fun and will apply again. I sort of wondered if more hunters pushing deer to each other wouldn’t increase harvest? New experience to us but it was enjoyed. Thanks to the base staff! They were excellent
