Default Doh! That'll leave a mark!

I've broken my ribs before, broke my hand, but this one I figure may take a bit of time to heal. I cracked my tibia plateau off and took a piece of my femur with it. Also where my ACL attaches broke off. Sat in the hospital for 7 days before they did surgery!

Most of the staff at the U of A hospital are awesome I definitely have to give a shout out to them for sure. I will say this though, anyone in the orthopedic surgery unit, pray you don't get Marika as a nurse

Anyhow, pretty much every doctor and nurse I have spoken with has said this particular break is a bad one and I've got a long road to recovery. I don't want to hear their sugar coated version..... lol, can someone who has experienced the same type injury chime in and let me know what I can expect over the next year or so?

Doc says 12weeks no weight on it and at least a year before I'm walking normal.

Holy crap!

No advice, but there’s gotta be a good story on how it happened.

Did whomever held your beer when you performed the act that resulted in the injury at least give it back afterwards?

We also expect some video footage.

Mend up well!

Lol.... ya there is. I should have stopped riding freestyle BMX in my 30's or once I hit 40! I was showing my 15yr old how to do a 180 and his BMX is a lot lighter than mine was. When I hopped in the air and did a tail whip the bike was taking off so I planted my left leg, unfortunately the bike and rest of my body was still rotating. Kind of twisted my leg apart at the knee. My kid figured it was pretty funny and asked if I wanted a hand up. When he walked up and noticed my leg was sticking sideways he asked if he should go get mom, lol. I had to get my wife to pull on my leg and straighten it out just so I could get in my truck!!!

Thanks Dick. Day two out of the hospital and had a shower. There are a lot of things I took for granted, I'm really happy I live in a bungalow! Unfortunately my man cave is in the basement, I'm going to give it a week or two before I venture down there.

Pm me your address and I'll walk your rifles for you.

I turned my ACL and other stuff into the spaghetti monster 2 years ago and just broke my ankle and foot. Being injured sucks bud.

Good luck with the recovery!

Ouch, that sounds mighty unfortunate! Hopefully you make a quick recovery, and are well enough in the fall to enjoy at least a little bit of hunting.

Oh ya!!!!!

I'm on some pretty strong pain killers and I almost forgot to mention the poor sob next to me! I feel really bad for this guy, his injury makes mine seem like a sliver!!!

No exactly sure on the particulars but he was playing with a loaded 12 gauge and went to put away and BOOM!!! Shot himself through the femur at point blank range!!! Almost died, was in ICU for a week. He had 2 surgeries while he was in my room, most likely a bunch before he got there and he's looking at countless more. Had to do a faciotomy (sp?) on his leg, where they split the leg open and leave it like that so the infection will drain. Still not sure if he'll lose his leg or not.

His injury sure made me feel like I'm on easy street as far as recovery goes and helped keep a positive outlook!!!

What sucks is because they had to do a bone graph I can't use ibuprophen or any type of anti inflamotory because I guess it stops the bone from bonding.

Well, your injury surely sucks but I’m glad to see that you are in good spirits. I hope that all goes well for you and you heal up quickly.

Edit.......That looks nasty, dude.

That last statement reminds me a little of something I would do. Though I'm pretty darn sure that yours was more painful. Years ago, I had a girl jump into my arms to dance with me. I wasn't watching and fell backwards and twisted with her, while my foot stayed planted. I had a nice spiral break right above the knob of my ankle. I figured it was just a sprain, so I hung out on a chair for while. I fell asleep, and when I woke up, everyone had went inside, or left, and it was morning. This was an outdoor party, so I hopped to my Kawasaki, and rode home. Shifting up hurt like a bugger, as I wasn't smart enough to use my hand, at the time.

I got home and got my leathers off, as nobody was going to cut them off of me. They wouldn't even x-ray it at the time, even though I could hear the bone shift when my leg went horizontal, because I didn't cry like a little girl.

3 days later they finally put a cast on when I went back. You get some looks, riding a street bike with one of those!

Kudos on staying active!

One of my best friends lost his leg and nearly died on the way to the hospital when a neighbor kid who was showing off his dad's shotgun shot him by accident. Hit him around the knee, and got amputated above. That bird shot makes a heck of a mess. He was almost out the front door when the gun went off.

When you're out, take it easy on the pain killers if you can. Most of them are pretty hard on your liver.

I've found that a couple beer, in my case work just as well, and are easier on you.

Get better soon!

Both my boys were outside when it happened and they looked super scared so to help them relax I was laughing and joking so they wouldn't worry. When I got to the hospital I was joking with the nurses and doctors. When the doctor asked if I could get out of the wheel chair onto the stretcher I stood on my good leg then sat on the stretcher then my leg shifted out from where my wife had set it and it popped out sideways again the doctors face dropped and she said "I just saw that, that's not good. We're going to get you some morphine". After x-rays both the doctor and nurses said they couldn't believe how calm I was. I said if it'll make me feel better I'll start screaming and crying right now! Lol.

I spent 10 days in the hospital, today is day two out. I'm already reducing my pain meds. Doctor said every 3 hours for the first 5-7 days. I'm already 4-1/2 to 5 hours in between sometimes. I'm saving my liver for whiskey and beer! Ha!!

Yikes Kurt ..
I shattered my femur about 6 " below my hip in my past life when racing snowmobiles. Two surgeries later, a real good Ortho ,a pin and I was walking with crutches in 8 weeks.. Less than a year later, I was 100% back to normal and haven't experienced an issue since.
You're in good hands and have a great mindset so I'm sure you won't be too long getting back to doing your things. Just don't push it when they do turn you loose. Here's to your speedy recovery.

Son of gun....that sounds bad.....the pictures confirm.
Hope you heal up well and get back to 100%.

And for some humour for you.....
Was replacing an injector on the lifted diesel truck in the driveway with a forward decline.
Part of the process is removing a value rocker and hence relashing it, requiring crawling under neath to rotate the crank.
In the process of working on the top, standing on a chair then going underneath, on a creeper a few times..... somehow the the creeper just happened to position itself under my foot as I stepped down off the chair.

Well I do stretch some times, BUT as I stepped down, this creeper, who normally does not roll well, seemed to be on greased declined glass, whips down hill while my other foot is still firmly planted on the chair.

Jon Claude Van Damme.....you ain’t seen nothing yet. This creeper stretched me out, with my front foot still 2ft up on the chair. Any movement just sent the creeper further out. It seemed as if my hips and legs were locked onto the chair and creeper in some mideavil torture device. The only thing I could do was with effort throw myself sideways to the ground.

And then roll around on the ground in pain with extremely stretched hamstrings.
My buddies thought it was excellent entertainment.
I on the other hand, keep my eye on creepers as if they are coiled cobras.

Weird how some accidents happen before you know it!

That's awesome news. The hardest thing is sitting still but it's also the thing the doctors stress the most. The last thing I want to do is prolong the recovery.

Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes!!!

Yikes! Hope you mend well.. I've learnt the hard way to slow down once I hit my 40's. No serious issues, but enough next day soreness to make me plan better the next time. I have surrendered to the realization that I'm not invincible anymore.

Kurt, Looking at the pics. Yeouch! Might have to change your handle to 35 Staples or Hardwarez.

My HD mechanic brother fell off of an earthmover onto a concrete shop floor and snapped his femur, broke his pelvis and a few other bones in that area. He was back to work and riding his street bike in 2 years. No limp or cane.

It's time for some hobbies. Fly tying and bullet making. Paint a picture or whittle a whistle. Definitely take the time to heal.

I bet if you bend your knee real good it would look like a Spalding hard ball. Those Spalding guys are always looking for good pictures for advertising.

As the hunter would say to his bird dog.... Heal boy..Heal! Best wishes for a good recovery.

Not as bad as your break but I did break a chunk off my tibia. They were able to screw it all together, I think the best thing healing was after the staples were out was soaking in a hot bath. I was in my 20's then so that was probably why I healed good, I lived a pretty normal life after. I'm 47 now and it bothers me now, I will probably end up with a knee replacement one day. Good luck and good healing.
