Default Good Books - Non Fiction Only

Looking for some new reading material, and I don't want to waste my time on fiction.

Undaunted Courage: the story of Lewis And Clark discovering the west. Really good read and learned a lot. What they went through was pretty amazing.

Alone in the Wilderness: story about Dick Proennke who at @50 years of age moved into remote Alaska to build a cabin by hand with tools he mostly built by hand. Pretty interesting read. He also filmed most of his exploits in 6mm film. There are two movies that go with the book as well. I much preferred the book. His cabin still stands to this day.

No problem.

Two stand out as fascinating. First is 'Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers' 15th ed. (Beaty/Fink). Second is 'The African Adventurers' (Capstick).

I found it a pretty good read while on nightshifts.

Enemy at the gates. About the battle of Stalingrad.

Another Capstick (ed) book, I'm presently reading Maneaters of Tsavo. The imagination runs wild when you're out taking that last wizz of the evening

Some great reading suggested so far, but my picks would be:
Death in the long grass - Peter Hathaway Capstick, (really anything that he wrote about his experiences)
The Secret Commandos - John L. Plaster ( absolutely amazing read, have read it at least 8 times)
Lone Survivor - Marcus Lutrell
War as I knew it- George S. Patton memoirs
American Sniper - Chris Kyle
Rogue Warrior - Richard Marcinko
House to House - David Bellavia

Jon Krakauer - "Into the thin air". About one of the deadliest Everest climbs, 1996. Read it non-stop while flying from Thailand back home, didn't even notice crappy food or tight seats.
There's a movie of the same name that kept it pretty close to the book. Another movie "Everest" came out last year, but it is "loosely based on real events" kinda deal.

I gave these three books 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. Click on the titles for the Amazon links.

The Boys in the Boat
*I have absolutely no interest in rowing but I loved this book.

In The Kingdom of Ice
*unputdownable - is that a word?

Unbroken
*100x better than the movie!

Default Life and travels of Josiah Mooso (Mousseau)

Stories of my great grandfathers life as told to a writer in his later years as he could not read or write (even spell his own name right). He was a French Canadian out west working for a fur trader company. His father let him go with a group of Catholic Jesuits when his mother died he was 10 years old. They never taught him to read or write.
His group of trappers were captured by Indians. He never saw his friends again. He was kept by an Indian princess as prisoner for months.
Another time while travelling in Indian territory, heard another horse whinny so hid in a hollow tree for 3 days with Indians nearby looking for him.
Married a girl off a Mormon wagon train, afraid the Mormons would kill him so left their company, raised 11 children with same woman living in various places in south eastern US.

x2 on Chickenhawk

Of all of the accounts I've read of the Vietnam war, this one stands out.

For a lighter topic, Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything. It is what the title says it is, but it is written in a way that is funny and easy to understand.

If you haven't tried Tom Brown or Sid Marty's books yet, check them out.

A great account of a trip to the backcountry in Nova scotia almost a hundred years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tent_Dwellers

Wow. Your ancestor sounds like he would have been a great guy to have around in a pinch. Where can I get this book?
