Default What river to fish in Montana?

Hi,

I am planning on going to Montana this summer on a fly fishing trip. What river do you recommend to fish?

Thanks

Choices are endless but I love the Madison. Tons of water but alot of fisherman as well. Truly great if you are a streamer fisherman and like early mornings.

Second vote for the Madison. Did a trip in early May last year. Good public access. Only served to whet my appetite to do more exploring in Montana with a fly rod. Lots of options for sure.

I'm going to Montana in 2018. I see alot of comments about "Lots of fisherman". How would it compare to our southern Alberta rivers as far as elbow room is concerned? To those that have fished both.

The Missouri above and below Craig. If you can manage the cost of a guide contact Montana Fly Goods in Helena (Gary Stocker).

Head all the way to Dillon then zig-zag your way north, endless possibilities! Driving home from Swan Valley 2 years ago I pulled over on the Missouri down stream of Wolfcreek...crazy PMD hatch and a couple of thousand Trout with there noses out of the water, didn't need a boat, amazing river!!

The Little Bighorn.......I was told there are about 4000 fish per mile. I caught about 20 of them one morning.

I may PM you guys later - planning in summer of 2018 and looking for places/access where you don't need a guide as well. Also heads up of places if I'm going to be standing shoulder to shoulder with other fly fishermen. Not really knowing - not sure if that is possible to get away from.

Or...

Please send me a PM or continue on this thread if you have ideas or suggestions that you know about on my above questions. Thanks.
