Maybe getting a little head of the game here. In any case...

There are piles of good advice on this thread regarding various options for a huntin' buddy. My two cents -> Overdo your research on what breed will fit your needs in the field and at home. Once you've decided on the breed, your next most important hurdle is to find a responsible and reputable breeder and ask the RIGHT questions. An example of the right questions to ask/checklist of considerations to give you the best chance of getting a healthy pup with good conformation, hunting ability, temperament can be found on various breed/breeder sites such as : http://www.vizslacanada.ca/buyer.htm OR http://www.freewebs.com/blackbulletsdogs/
There are also good posts on this site that outline similar lists.
Think about the time that you'll be investing in the pup once you've got him. Taking the time (like you are), before hand will maximize your return on that investment.
Good luck RustyDog!

Default poddles

There are a couple of Standard Hunting poddles in our area first time I saw them in the field my springers werent sure what to make of them. For a long legged dog they sure move nice, but it just looks wrong.

Lol, you guys make me smile. I don't have the time to write a lengthy response right now, but tomorrow after a day of grouse hunting I will take the time to address some of the "advice" given to me.
At the end of the day a dog is only as good as the handler.

I have seen a couple black Master Hunter titled standard poodles when I was competing down south last summer. Sure changed my opinion, to the point, will own one, one day. And yep , going to get the poodle clip, pink bows in ears and some bling. Look forward to hearing the chatter when the dog aces their set up
On my bucket list LOL

Lol, I am soooo glad that isn't true, otherwise there would be a lot more useless hunting dogs out there, including mine!

Not true at all, both my dogs are better than their handler.

This poodle got her first 3 grouse today. Not quite as good as my golden, but not bad!

I'm curious to see how she handles the ducks next.

I think more of us are laughing in your direction than the other way. So please save your "lengthy" response and lets just get back on the grouse dog topic.

In my opinion a lab is really the only choice. There is lots of other choices but labs are awsome

Very well bred Vs from outstanding lines, with generations of health tests and titles in field and show and take back and health guarantees from knowledgeable, and supportive breeders can be easily found for 900.00- 1500.00 in Canada and the USA.

Xena

Saw about 30 spruce grouse. Shot 3. As much as it shames me I wasn't able to recover one, the dog and I looked for 30 minutes in a 20'x20' area. Grass is 4-5 feet tall with fallen trees on the bottom...

To Versatile: laugh all you want, I could care less.

I'll edit some replies in later today. Want to eat my grouse, lol.

Default Just checking

Just checking ,maybe a misprint. $3000.00 for a Viszla .....

They make great pets , kind of a unique personality ,but pretty far

Down the list of popular Birddogs ,here in Alberta.....

I have owned a few ,couple of them were pretty handy .....but not in the same class as the Brits ,GSP , and Labs for pheasants here ...

But Good Luck ....

Default Bird dog

If you want to send your pup up for a training session we might have a spot open late season. One of specialties is scent tracking.

Well, let me clarify 3,000 includes 1,200 for the shipping of the bitch, 500 for the shipping of the dog
Edit: never mind that you are passing judgement purely on a dollar number, quite ridiculous.

Default Legitimate Question

The female out of Hungary ,did you buy her by reputation ,sight unseen ,

How did you come across the breeder , My biggest male came from

Hungary ,he didn't look anything like the other three , who were

Canadian bred and about 3 rd generation from Europe . So 15hun for a dog from

Good lines is not out of whack ,the shipping kills you like buying from

Cabelas . Sometimes you just get lucky ,I bought my current dog ,cause

My wife thought he was cute , what I didn't realize till after ,was that I couldn't

Buy a Better Griffon by lineage if I tried...Cause I didn't look to deep before.

A guy on Versatile Dogs filled me in ,he knew the whole story , I don't think

My breeder knew what she had.....lol again good luck ...,can't wait to see the pups.
