Default Myths in the hunting world

What are some of the more common myths which circulate in the realm of hunting and outdoor activites.
Some which come to mind are:

Posted land cant be hunted even by the land owner. (not to cause a heated discussion)

5 Round magazine capacity applies to Enfield 303's. Ever seen how many rounds go in a typical 30-30 Marlin or Winchester rifle?

Shooting does will ruin the chances to produce a big buck (bad game mangement)

Upland game birds cant be shot with a .22.

Alberta whitetails require a minimum 180grain 30 cal bullet of designed similar to a Swift A-Frame, or Barnes bullet.Driven no slower than 3000fps at the muzzle(Expounded by some outfitters to American clients)

So what are some others you've heard?

here's a few

3.5" shotshells are needed to kill geese

Steel shot is crap and doesn't work

You can't shoot steel shot through a Full choke

Overcast and rainy days are best for waterfowl hunting

The best time to hunt whitetails is in November, during the rut

A cold snap kicks in the rut

Shooting a rifle at the 100 yd range off the bench is good hunting practice

Reloading your own rifle ammo is the only way to go

That's true here in AB : I have the data on it.

Another one is "No one has seen a Raven's nest".
I have a nesting pair within sight of my place. Which I like....as they are keeping the Hawks away !

Mulie bucks always stop and look back at you, thus making them an easy target. They don't get big for no reason.
If a buck is a 3X3 he will always be a 3X3.
Hunting a cutline is easy as you just have to sit there.
You cannot apply for both trophy and archery antelope.
Pike are not good eating.
The Oilers are a "good" team.

By July the swelling in their mouths will have gone. I'll try and remember to dig the info out on this topic and post it in the next couple days....

Default Lies, lies, lies!

Bear baiting takes no effort

There are 682 (or is it less than that?) grizzlies in AB

Cougars should be protected as there aren't many around

Hunting isn't fair to the animals, they all want to hug you and do sing alongs

Oh, ya, one more, Calgary is going to win the cup (had to!!!)

I have never caught a pike without teeth. And I have fished them all year. They may lose a few and replace them at a certain time of year. but then again many fish do. ie) sharks are continuously losing and replacing teeth.

If it was not for the release program, there would be NO pheasants in Alberta.
How do you think they got here?

my wife loves and supports me before and during hunting seasons.
kids that grow up hunting are more likely to be killers.(True in one way i guess) Bow hunters wound more animals than gun hunters.OPPS did i say that out loud. I give two turds about what non hunters think of me for hunting....

Dick as one who holds that "There are no absolutes "
I am surprised you would start such a thread that so far have been one liners that make the assumtion that absolutely sometihng is or is not.

Like your comment on grouse with a .22cal. There are places where grouse may not be shot with a .22 cal. but may be shot with a shotgun.

And we must be careful of the definition of words we use in absolutes
When a bullet leaves the barrel it will not rise above the line of the bore but may rise above the line of the sights.(and should do so)

Is the drayton gun show April 19th or 26th? My calander shows Christmas, New years and Easter but for some reason not the Drayton gun show???

Duffy there are no absolutes, I wrote my prose with Alberta in mind, yes you can legally take upland birds with a .22 rimfire, what most guys get hung up on is the refrence to single projectiles WRT migratory waterfowl.
I for one would have thought you would have seen the inferance and caught on but I guess that was not as absolute of a no brainer as one would have expected.
Yes April 26th.
I think I'll start a post inthe G&A section.

Dick when I said "there are places" I meant places in Alberta.

If you are driving down a road allowence with a developed road on it and you see a grouse in the ditch you CAN get out load up and shoot the bird with a shotgun. NOT with a .22 or any other "rifle".

If a grouse flies up and lands on a branch high above yur head you Can shoot it with a .22 but I would not as the bullet (hit or miss) would go off into the wild blue yonder.

Well like you always say "there are no absoulutes" Sometimes you can shoot upland birds with a .22 and sometimes you can't. (but you are "never" supposed to shoot a duck with a single projectile bullet)

Robin

I am as certian as I can be that there are no absolutes. Hows that?
