Default First Buck

I went out Friday morning to some land my family owns with a plan to sit in a blind my friend and I just built for this year when I shot this buck. I walked a few hundred yards down a road built on the land and when I came to the clearing I first saw a doe and then a minute later saw this guy. Standing shot about 150 yards away and he hit the dirt. Getting him into the truck by myself was tough, he was quite heavy!

That's a great looking deer right there, congrats. And yup! They are heavier than you think, trying to hoist them into a truck by yourself!

Thanks! Luckily I found a small hill to back the truck up to to decrease the distance into the box

Does anyone have a recommendation for a taxidermist that does a good euro mount?

Congrats on a Awesome WT.
As for the Euro, depends on where you live. Good taxidermists in just about every corner of the province. You can't go wrong by checking the Forums Sponsors, some good taxidermists on there.
Again, Congrats

Awesome first deer!

Really neat the way his right antler looks like it got confused and swapped the G1 and G2.

Great Buck, especially for your first. I like your gut collection system, you are a fast learner.

That's a terrific buck! That rack is going to look fantastic on your wall.

I have a solution for your loading issue:

First, dress them out in the field. That will remove some weight making it easier to load.

Second, get a ramp. I have a piece of treated plywood that is about 40" wide by 6' long (I have a 6' bed). Pulling them up a ramp is very easy, even for an older guy like me who has a bad back and two bum knees!

Third, 30 mm poly. I keep a roll in my truck during hunting season. It has many uses. But tossing a chunk under a dead animal helps move it along.

Lastly, a 2500 lb quad winch mounted on a headache rack. I did this in 2008 after shooting my first elk. It took all three strong grown men had to get her in the back of the truck (no ramp at that time). I figured there had to be an easier way and came up with that idea. Now when loading elk or moose, one guy can do it all by himself.

The winch saved my bacon with a real nice 5x5 whitey buck I bagged in 2012. He was on the edge of a river valley when I shot him and jumped down. I had to bring him about 30 yards horizontally and about 30' vertically. It was a very steep incline and with snow, it was tough climbing. I carry a roll of 3/8" rope and pulled out the winch cable as far as it would go then strung out enough rope to reach the buck. Stood in the back of my truck and held the button down while reeling him up, and in. Without the winch I would have had to quarter him out and that would have been murder up that slope in snow (remember, older guy with a bad back and bum knees..........LOL)

Thanks for the kind comments and advice! The funny part is I did dress it in the field but it was still pretty heavy and I thought I had rope but I only had paracord lol. Left the house in a hurry I guess.

The sled under the deer was to collect the hide and trimmings. I like the poly idea for dragging it out though!
