Default How to get the 'In'

I just moved into a new area, and would like to be able to, at the very least, shed hunt on some of the properties around town. I've acquired a county map so that i know where crown land is. But what if i notice a prime spot that could be a treasure trove of sheds from the huge number of deer I see every evening when I drive by, how do you go about for permission? Just go knock on the guys front door? What's kosher? And i don't want to step on any toes and get a bad rep in the neighbourhood. I'm looking to make friends here.

Going to knock on doors and introduce yourself and ask for permission is your best bet, as long as it's not at 6 AM. I think the general consensus is to look presentable, be polite, and if turned down, thank the land owner and try the next place. It doesn't hurt to have some sort of contact "business card" with all your personal info on it, especially for hunting permission.

As with everything in life, if you don't ask , you don't get.

Don't go before 9.
Don't go at lunch.
Don't go at supper.
If there is someone working in the yard, go talk to them first. most times that is the person that you want to chat with. Be respectful and polite and don't be afraid to walk up and shake hands and introduce yourself. Be upfront and forthcoming. People don't like it if you beat around the bush.
I prefer to talk to someone in person rather than on the phone. If it does come to a phone call, I always offer to arrange a face to face.

Thanks everyone! I just wanted to make sure that knocking on doors (at appropriate times) was normal. Figured it would be, but to get a general consensus is reassuring.

Thanks again.

It helps if you understand a bit about farming, and being interested in farming and farm related issues helps even more.

Keep in mind, the farmer or someone in his family might collect antlers.

Ask about closing gates you see open, mention broken fences you see on the property. Show concern for the farmers interests, it'll open a lot of doors for you. And always always always close any gate you open, unless told not to by the land owner.
