Personally I have used worms and just a standard hook and I have also thrown lures like those seen here

or you can even get something like this from our very own BBJ

Oh and most of the guys here have never caught a bass...... unless they have left Alberta and fished elsewhere. They are all experts in Trout however.

Grew up fishing the great lakes. So bass were common.

Silver (white) bass

Worms and just a hook and sinker or hook and bobber

Rock Bass

Worms and just a hook and sinker or hook and bobber

Large Mouth

all of the tackle shown before

Small Mouth

all of the tackle shown before

I knew a lot of guys who would spend the money on lures..... I just liked finding what they lost to snags.
But I never specifically targeted them unless fishing a derby.
I have always fished light gear.
Always found bass to be very boney, so they werent enjoyable for eating, but rather loved the fight they would provide.

I like to use topwater buzz baits. I never had much luck with those V shaped wire lures. Bass are pretty aggressive and will go after just about anything if the weather's right and you get it near them.

I always had good luck with rubber (sluggos) and small crank bait. They are an agressive fish so cover lots of ground. Don't spend much time beating the same spot. Early season try surface bait or any bait in the shallows. Usually gets lots of action.

When I was down in Florida last winter, all they would hit were Gary Yakamoto's "wacky worms".

Bass everywhere love crayfish , jig and pork combos are near universal, browns and purples being a fave of mine . Great lake smallies have taken on gobbies as a main food scource green to olive tubes and the actual gobbie jigs have worked in the past . River smallies like a down stream presentation , I have used marabough( sp??) Jigs under a silp float to great success in southern ont. Stonefly imitations also work well with this method. Hope that helps.tight lines .

I would try fishing fast for them this time of year. A 1/2 white spinnerbait with twin blades would be a great choice to find fish. Just keep it moving fast don't worry they will catch it.
Topwater baits are a good choice for smallmouths early in the season and if the action slows down a senko, drop shot rig or tube jig can create some fun memories.
Look for rock flats close to deeper water.

Smallmouths are a fun fish and great fighters.

Have Fun
