This section of the awesome AO forum is for Fly Fishing.
I wonder why there would be a post in this forum about anything other than Fly fishing.
I have been guiding Fly fisherman on the Mighty Bow River since 1980.
I have no problem taking SPIN Fisherman down the river in my boat, but it has been my observation that SPIN Fishing is not as effective or pleasurable as Fly Fishing.
All other **** slinging aside, This is a FLYFISHING forum..
If you want to sling bait and other crap, I do believe you have your own place to converse.
It is not high handed or any other thing.
Some Fly Fish, Some Bait Fish..Some could care less ..
I guess it all comes down to how you view your sport.
I just go out and have as much fun as possible.
I don't count Fish.
I don't count Money. I count enjoyable experiences.
Go On and sling your smelt thumping, Bait Fishing whatever, But not in My Boat.

I've never seen such a petty, immature and elitist group of people...

I can see some people are being tongue in cheek, but others... Act your age and be happy someone is enjoying fishing.

You forgot the tweed jacket, tie and cufflinks, obviously you know little about proper fly fishing etiquette. You don't use catgut leaders, you fish downstream, don't know your flask has to be of sterling silver with the finest Scotch, you probably drink beer and you can't recite poetry.

I've seen your kind....Chinese flies, ball cap with embroidered fish skeleton and a go pro....pffft.....You think 'matching the hatch' is a new pokemon game.

I used a fly rod, with butt extension, and a closed faced spin rod, bounceing a bug along the surface, to catch salmon, couldnt cast, or wade because of conditions. This method got the fly, long distance to the school--so now spin fishing with a fly rod---Okkkk think I got it ---fishing section---I am new here seems this fine distinction important--IN Alberta.cheers

A little off track, but give the deadly sea trout fly a try, as described---It has caught many huge trout, did really well one day at Police Outpost, The size 18 will lose many but you get to at lease hook some trout--This is the most simple of all to tie.

I totally agree.
Its been a long winter and its still going to be a while before open water (at least in the Edmonton area) so I'm a bit snarky.

fly fishing … angling with a line to which only
an artificial fly is attached (floats, sinkers,
or attracting devices may not be attached
to the line when fishing is restricted to "fly
fishing only”).

artificial fly … a single-pointed hook that is
dressed only with fur, feathers, hair, textiles,
tinsel and/or wire, and to which no external
weight or external attracting device is
attached. Two or more hooks tied in tandem
is not permitted. Where gear is restricted
to artificial flies, floats and sinkers may
be attached to the line. Where areas are
restricted to “fly fish only” floats and sinkers
may not be attached to the line or fly.

So chuck and duck isn't fly fishing, because it doesn't use the weight of the line to cast? If I put a small spoon on my spey rod am I still fly fishing?

I've been fishing with flies for over 40 years, using every type of delivery possible, yet I'm not a fly fisherman?

Lmao. Let me also say this, I found that the movie "River runs through " or whatever its called, was stupid and overrated. IMO. The fish eats the hook the same no matter how its delivered. A bobber is an indicator, the same thing.
By the way my 5 year old doesn't care what you think, and I agree. She's catching trout on the fly. So she's not flipping a fly rod but she's catching a dozen trout a day when we get out in the boat.

Wrong section, maybe. Wrong reaction by the very few complaining, definitely.

No it does not. But is was pretty easy to poke the bear on this one. Everyone here is having a little bit of FUN except the elites, but they never have fun. They just smugly go about their world view and behavior modification tenants while us half-blooded MUGGLES grab life and take it for a spin. GLTA

It actually takes skill to fly fish, seen 2 year old spin cast, so congrats on havin the skill set of a two year old! Putting a fly on a spinning is not fly fishing, I huck lures too, but unlike the some of these geniuses on here, I was able to differenciate between the two types of fishing, learn to read English, YOU'RE IN CANADA, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, do us all a favour and, LEAVE!!!!!!

Default Confessions of a Fly Fisherman

This is all too funny...

I confess, I do own 2 spinning rods and chuck gear on occassion.
My wife also has a couple spinning rods and I do on occassion set her up with a water filled bobber and flies.

I'm sorry, I won't do it again and I will hand in my "Elite" card by the end of the day. 😎😫😰😈

Whoa, a whole dozen trout a day?? We got ourselves a regular bob Izumi here folks, what did you do after breakfast?

The Book, a River Runs Through it is thought of as an American Treasure, written by Norman Maclean. The movie was typical Hollywood Crap.
This thread has 2 sides and no winner.
My Boat is always full BTW.
I have spent over 1,800 days, on the Bow , In a Drift Boat.
I have guided the rich and famous, the poor and happy and always have a smile on my face.
I only respond to say that it is perfectly acceptable to fish in any manner that you choose.
The rest of this thread is just shack nasties , and I could not care in which way you choose to fish.
BTW, it does not take long to be a proficient caster, but a lifetime to fully understand the dynamic of Flyfishing.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and A River Runs Through it..
I am haunted by Waters...
